why is that so true?
yea i've had the same thoughts before, we as a culture have taken up the mindframe that we need to "pay" for what was done to the blacks over a hundred years ago by our ancestors.
honestly, out ancestors fought and died over it, we had a war, (true, the war was not just about slavery, but it WAS a part of it).
Personaly, i dont think that we are responsible to repay anything anymore. the past cant be un-done, no matter how much money and privlige you throw at it.
It is the responsibility of everyone, blacks, whites and everyone else, to allow the past to be the past, and look to the future and atempt to make the best out of OURSELVES and not ask to be pulled up by others. America was (not so much anymore) the land of oprotunity, where a person could make there own way, and had every right to do it. its time we re-embraced that, and people stopped asking for handouts and whent out and got what they wanted.

everyone tries to quash the past and just says "get over it." i've got nothing against moving on, but trying to forget the past is wrong. i agree that it is pointless and unproductive for black people to hold a grudge against the white race for something that ended over a century ago. however, they also have legitimate complaints about the white race. white people still do oppress black people, and provide them with less opportunities. if you want an example, think of this: a typical white employer has recently interviewed two potential employees. they are both highly qualified, and the only difference is in their race - one is white, and one is black. which one would you think the employer picks? now, i understand that it's the other way around with a black employer. but statistically speaking, members of society's higher echelons are predominantly white - this yields less job opportunities for blacks. this is an imbalance caused by the general white notion of white supremacy and the desire to oppress the blacks, as was painfully evident until relatively recently (sometimes even so today); black people simply weren't allowed to get into high positions back then, because of the "fact" that white people were better than blacks and blacks in high positions would ruin society. therefore, white racism against black people is still directly responsible for the imbalance we see today in society.
thus, considering this imbalance, there are fewer opportunities for black people to engage in society and thrive. and as for oppression of black people, the amount of derogatory black jokes that circulate between people and the internet (sometimes even on TV) is clear proof. do you ever hear of "white jokes" (different from redneck jokes, blonde jokes, and the like), in which stereotypical white people are made fun of? probably not in America.
and when black people do express these legitimate complaints, the white people say "they're just blaming us for slavery." most people don't look into these problems seriously, and the few people that do consider these social problems and take action are criticized for being narrow-minded, since they're only helping black people and not anyone else. news flash: black people have probably gone through more hardship than has any other race in the world, and consequently has had a very late start in society.

I do know exactly what it feels like to be discriminated against, though. It is a horrible feeling, and I do not understand why people do it. I guess we just need a way to put ourselves above others... it's sad, really. Maybe I was wrong to say forgive and forget. We should not forget. We should remember, but we should always forgive. Perpetuating it further does no good.

Are we so screwed up that we're giving jobs to less qualified people, just cause they're black or hispanic?
That's the same thing as discrimination, except worse, since it singles out one minority and a white minority. Why are caucasians the basis for judgement?

the people who complain about affirmative action are usually the ones who can't deal with the competition. in their cases, they probably wouldn't have landed jobs anyway, even without affirmative action.

(Directed at blacks) Honestly, I needed to get that out. I have no problem with recognizing your freedom, but when you want to make me go out of my way to do something for you as an apology for something I didn't do? I think that I'll walk away, that's what I'll do. I've done it before, and I can do it again.
Also, how- please tell me- are blacks at ANY disadvantage to whites? Is it because they're discriminated against? Cause last time I checked, there was a little thing called the Civil Rights Movement. And that basically abolished any racism that was dangerous or had a true longstanding effect. People can't think that just because they're from a minority, they have a right to things other people have worked harder for.
Anyway, with all this "political correctness" going around, no one should be discriminated, because it's politically incorrect to say black, even though it is not incorrect to say white. Also Mexican.
And my last point. We're not jump-starting squat. They've had enough time to do that. I'm not afraid to say this- How many black people do you see sitting on the streets every day? I see hundreds, at least in Philly. There are about half as many whites. Wanna know why? It's because they thought that they could sit back and relax and let the Government get them a job because they were a minority. Whites don't have that luxury, so they have to work harder. Now I suggest you research a little more, or just take a look around. I see many black people in jobs, and those I know have College degrees. Because they worked for them.

Now, affirmative action should be in place, but based on weath, schooling, and where someone lives. If someone black was not taught as well because of race, by all means let them go to college for less. But rich, smart blacks should not be offered scholarships because of skin color. If people would just look into history of students who apply, maybe kids who really are at a disadvantage could be helped.
