Poll #3 - Administration
#1
Posted 15 September 2004 - 10:46 PM
If you are unsure of what I mean by "administration", I mean anyone in the position of "admin" on the forums (Rylkan and I currently). Unlike the other polls, you can address me and my actions personally. Please don't direct too much criticism at Rylkan, as he has been behind the scenes mostly and active more in maintaining the site along with me and not as much on the forums. Say what you like and dislike (or even hate) about me though. Say what you think needs to change. I will not look down on anyone for whatever criticism is directed at me. I am used to it and can read it objectively and not take it personally.
As usual though, please do not negatively address other specific members here.

That be a 9 from my views. I see you and Rylkan both as responsible, un-impulsive admins. You only take major actions when needed, and you update when you think we need one. You run the forums smoothly, and I see no problems with the way you do it. Some may say you're a bad admin, but I whole-heartedly disagree. Rylkan however is a bit... slow
But, he has his reason, of course.

I gave you a solid 10 here. I really have nothing to complain about your preformance. Give yourself a pat on the back (and give Rylkan a potato).

Lets review the facts
... Still not sure how you manage that last one, it's beyond me. (ask Final
)
You're a great admin, and even if Rylkan is a bit inactive I'm sure he devotes as much time to it as he can.
- You put a heap of time into the site and forums
- You put a heap of money into maintaining it
- You put a lot of effort into trying to get all the facts before acting
- Whenever possible, you let the clan lead themselves
- You avoid the impulse to tinker with settings for practical jokes

What did I put? Well, the lowest one there anywho. I feel there really aren't enough site updates (I mean I PMed that chat code update to you over a month ago...) and really, there aren't strict enough punishments.
Oh, and you can get a potato gun and scare Rylkan for me.

I'm not sure that you realize what I'm working on (it's fine, I wouldn't expect everyone to know). I am updating the entire site, almost every single page is being updated in some way, and I was stupid enough to do the layout first so I can't update it in pieces. Also, I'm sorry but I had to get a slightly different script. Yours would work but I had to get one set up so it would physically convert the chat server over to liveharmony (it was quickchat before). What has been keeping me from cranking out this update are things on the forums and my real life work which is required to keep the website online in the first place. I'm working on it, trust me, and once it's created I will physically be able to update the site more frequently when necessary; when the layout is uniform I will be able to have specific little updates here and there without worrying about the entire site's continuity.

Since these are real issues and updates seem to fluctuate between features (such as forums, then to games, then to the site) due to how time must be spent on everything, I am in the process of "hiring" a third full-time webmaster. Rylkan has been busy and I won't bother him with it since the site requires much more time than he can give at the moment - it is much more than just creating updates and posting on the forums (we have to keep the server online, manage the games, manage situations as they come up, and everything else). A third webmaster will solve the update issues because I will be able to focus more on the site itself and not handle every single issue that comes up with the server, security, and forum/game administration.
The third webmaster will be someone I personally know and someone I know is familiar with network administration at least somewhat. It will almost positively be someone that no one here knows, but I am expecting that he or she would be welcomed at least somewhat. I am not yet positive of who it will be, I need to contact some people, but I will try my best to get another for the site.
I am just letting everyone know, hopefully things will turn out alright.
The reason things have been slow is because I have been having to manage things entirely on my own, and unfortunately (and contrary to what some think) running your own server takes a bit more time than just going on a shared host.

You try to do too much cspace.
Updates would come faster if you lightened your workload and had others take care of it. With all the new things coming in, there's no way you'll be able to do everything. You're doing great, but you need to break off a piece of that Kit-Kat bar and chill.
And I haven't seen enough defenstration lately.
