QUOTE (Cspace @ Mar 23 2004, 01:50 AM)
It usually takes me roughly 4-5 hours (once 3 hours and 45 minutes, but that was a freak) on a 2.8 GHz computer with 512 MB of RAM. It takes a while (a loooong time on my old comp, hehe), but it's crunching a lot of data that otherwise would tax multi-million dollar systems. In fact, SETI@home is the largest supercomputer in the world, consisting entirely of average PCs all around the world. TheSmile.gif

BTW, I've been receiving a few questions about what happens when a data unit is completed, and I'll truthfully say 'not much' ( bluetongue.gif ). If you set it to automatically connect to the internet, it will upload the completed unit and download a new one on its own. Otherwise you'll have a flashing icon in the taskbar that you would click on to connect. Either way, you send them the current data unit, and they send you a new one to work on. Here's the basic screen if you're interested:

no ofence, but ur comp is stupid, you would get a beter overal result with a slower processer and more ram, really 512?
i have 1.5gig and thats not enough........

Assuming that you use your SETI account on one computer, your average is about 20 minutes longer than my current one (not counting an old comp that would crunch a data unit for 70 hours at a time... hehe). A slower processor would not increase the speed of your program though, however RAM helps (I plan to upgrade to at least a gig relatively soon). It isn't just your speed though, it's also background processes (and I'm frequently running many programs at once).

Rylkan also just built a new computer (I think slightly faster than mine), and his data units are cranked out at about the same speed.

no, by having a slower proceser i dont mean thats a plus, i mean that if ur gonna spend the same amout u best get slower proceser and more memory, its best to get both fast though!

also i have a cancer reserch prog going at the same time as seti so it slows down!

RAM helps a lot, and you sure have enough of it to multitask quite a bit, hehe. bluetongue.gif

With as much as I'm running I'm going to need to upgrade my RAM soon, but my priority right now is the server for CurvedSpace. grnwink.gif

I have a Athlon XP 1.39ghz overclocked to 1.55ghz (could go faster, but the RAM is cheapo stuff and can't keep up sad.gif ) w/ 1gb RAM and a 1.4ghz Duron w/ 128mb RAM, usually takes about 6hours-ish to do a unit.

Isn't this like the cancer one, where one complex unit could take 40 odd hours to do whereas a simple one could take 20mins... or is it like a specific process where it does the same calculations to every unit?

The units vary slightly in size, though are usually about the same. grnwink.gif

Hmmm... I used to have Seti@home years ago. Probably forgot to reinstall it after one of the overhauls. Hmm... probably should download it and join in sometime soon.

We march... We march to war... We march... We fight... We are Spartans. Blood will fall, but it will not be ours... We march... Sparta is war reborn... we are the children of war... We are Spartans.
I am Leonidas, and this is my story. I have met the wolf, felt its bite, and I have survived. These new wolves are neverending, but Sparta will show true might. Though we fall, still we will come for we are war incarnate. I have started this, and so must I finish it. Xerxes shall die, this I, Leonidas, warlord of Sparta, do say. This is the story of the 300... the story of Spartan heroism. Though we bled the ground red at Thermopolyae, still we live on.
War is Sparta, We are Spartans. We are War!

lol, my fastest unit was about 10 hours, on average it takes about that, although after I nicked Battlefield Vietnam off Leftyy they take about 20-30 hours...

It's absitively, posolutely, 100% free. It's a scientific research project; why would they make you pay to help them out? bluetongue.gif Head to the site, register, download, and you should be good to go.

BTW, I've completed 5 data units thus far, and about 75% done with my 6th. Takes me about 40 hours per unit <_<
