What kind of name is "Earth"?

Well, where else would I go to find out other than Webster's Dictionary?

The roots of the word "Earth": "Middle English "erthe", from Old English "Eorthe"; Akin to High German "erda", Greek "era" - Before 12th century"

EORTHE??????

What kind of name is that?

That sounds like some amphibious swamp monster... But we live on it? Lol, if I ever go back in time and hear someone say "Eorthe" I will do nothing but laugh my head off for at least 15 minutes.

Eorthe...

You know the surest sign that there is intelligent life elsewhere? That it hasn't tried to contact us yet! Us Eorthians, we couldn't POSSIBLY be intelligent... And by contacting us we would probably corrupt an entire species.

It's not just our planet either, it's our entire system.

What about our moon? Lots of planets have moons... Some of them are called Ganymede, Titan, Phobos, Mimas, and Tethys. We have a moon too! All of the other moons have such cool names, ours would probably have the best of them all because, after all, it is our moon. So what did they call our moon?

"Moon"

What's wrong with those old astronomers????

I think they just got tired of naming moons, so they just named ours based on its label and were done with it. So instead of something like Deimos, Callisto, Charon, or something else... Our moon is called Moon! That is sure a mark of intelligence. biglaugh.gif

That's like calling a dog "Dog".

... And then came the astronomers' second chance! They found another moon orbiting the Eorthe. It is really small, in some ways it could not be considered a moon, but it is indeed a natural satellite. It is in some ways our second moon. The astonomers would definitely not screw up again. Definitely not.... So, with all their intelligence and creativity, and with "Moon" being taken already, what name did they think up for our second moon?

"Cruithne"

WHAT KIND OF NAME IS THAT? How do you even pronounce that? If someone asks me what our second moon is called I would just spell it. I would call it "C-R-U-I-T-H-N-E".

I mean, compared to that, "Moon v2.0 Alpha" would be much better, right?

Now I'm not done here! That was just our planet and two moons. What about our star?

Take a look at a star chart. What do you see? You see some cool places like "Regulus", "Vega", "Delta Crateris", "Polaris", and "Alpha Centauri". Our star would probably have a cool name like those too! It would have to! So what is it called?

"Sun"

Bah, I'm getting tired of anything relating to Eorthe. Makes me want to move to another star in our galaxy... But wait! I'm still not done!

Our galaxy is really big. Billions of stars, countless planets, potential for life, black holes, and other cool stuff like that. If anything were to have a cool name, it would be the galaxy (I mean, it would represent everything within it). Some others are Andromeda, Triangulum, the Magellanic Clouds... What ammunition do us Eorthians have left in the scheme of the universe? Our last chance at having a "cool" image in the face of now extra-galactic life... So how would we label ourselves?

As inhabitants of the Milky Way.

Ok, I'll just stop right now... If we want to live in a purely cool system we would have to leave the entire galaxy. I may just do that when a third Eorthian moon is found.

Interesting place we live in, eh? thumb.gif spit.gif alien2.gif screama.gif 1zhelp.gif

So this is what Cspace does in his spare time...

Why isn't our planet called Saturn? It's a much cooler name, who cares what the root is. Let's make giant paper chains for the rings!

Earth's real name is "Terra." It's called "Earth" for simplicity.
The moon's real name is "Luna." It's called "the moon" for simplicity.
The sun's real name is "Sol." It's called "the sun" for simplicity.
RuneScape (the world, not the game) is really called "Gielenor." We call it "RuneScape" for simplicity.

Oh wait, this is the Insanity Board. My mistake.

A!

One more and we've got a majority vote from Vowelia, the famed "swing state" so important in our elections here...

Yeah, 6 vowels, "Y" moved in recently...

Lol, "Earth" comes from a few different origins, "Moon" is called "Moon" because *I believe* it was given this name before any other moons were discovered, the Sun does come from Sol, and the Milky Way is named the Milky Way because of the hazy appearance of our galaxy's arm when viewed in a really dark location with the unaided eye.

But c'mon, this is the Insanity Board so we shouldn't think about that!

I favor renaming Earth "Planet"! thumb.gif
