thirdly: i dont know how you know which it 'teaches' (i thought they just learned them, but i guess not ^_^), so ill guess tidal flame (seems most likely

I checked my guide and niether of the two I mention dropped it (nor does Baku). I'm pretty sure, however, that you can have the tidal flame ability when you fight the plat-cage monster. I know this because it hits multiple enemies, and this made me lose because it hit Dagger... Unless the regular dagger has that ability (I think it only has free energy or something like that), then there is some way to obtain the magemasher prior to ice caverns. I cannot remember how, though. Perhaps Baku does drop it, as the guide for FF9 was by far the worst guide ever.

Maybe avoid blowing $15 on a guide and just use GameFAQs ... either that or actually play the game on one's own ...
