The newspaper I work for donated $100,000 to aid. I don't know how far that will go though... icon_sweatdrop.gif

Australias total donation is 1 billion AU dollars. That's about 760 million US.

*Mocks* We donated more! And our country is smaller!

well now it's past 155,000 and it's possible it will reach 300,000 in the next few weeks/months because of diseases in the water, etc....

What makes me mad is that nobody ever helped them before the disaster, which is pathetic. The only time the fortunate help others (for the most part) is in times of disasters like these, but we let them starve when the weather is good...

Actually, that's what World Vision, Community Aid Abroad and all those sort of things are (and always have been) for. TheSmile.gif

Third party/volunteer work doesn't give them billions of dollars that are needed to get safe drinking water, food, and shelter. This goes for all countries in the world, most third world.

There are groups, but most are very bad and almost a scam. You would be surprised at the percent of your donation actually going to victims (in any situation).

actually it was most of indias fault that no one cud help them. they blame US for the disaster and not warning them. its not our problem, were not gonna send buoys over to india just to protect them. thats their proble. india HAS the technology to deploy buoys. thyve sent satelites and shuttles to space but not buoys to protect them from the indian ocean.

when hurricanes hit florida we dont see anyone helping america. but when the world is in trouble america donates a reasonable amount to donate and even sends aid over there. no one needs to blame us. when someone trips u shud help them get back up cuz dats the right thing to do.

hehe just saying wat my geo teacher told us and its to base's post

That second paragraph has everything to do with this. It is wrong of us to only help them during disaster and not contribute like this during their struggles in daily life. If everyone in America could give up one dollar a day to help people, we could generate 200-300 million dollars a day. A group effort works the best, but most people just don't care until a massive event happens.

You can't relate this to a hurricane by any means. We have the technology to show us exactly where they are going and we can prepare. Our buildings are generally built to withstand them and I'm not too sure of the death toll, but I know it didn't go over 1k, probably didn't even go over 100.

heh us hudnt really b mad of that. india is one of the top leading economy and one of the most technological countires. all theyre research is based on Space. they rarely spend them on introducing anything weather related cuz i dont think they get much tsunamis. but lesson learned here (i hope) that they need to research the safety of their ppl and raise minimum wage posibly give more job opportunities. we have a war going on in iraq and i dont think donating money to the tsunami countries wasnt an agenda until the earthquake happend and the tsunami hit and the death toll kept rising. now we put aside hte war in iraq to donate to the tsunami-hit countries.

the only way we cudve detected the earthquakes and tsunami was if we put buoys there. we only have buoys on the pacific and atlantic to protect US. we cant put buoys everywere to protect EVERYONE.

If that's true I'll be very surprised. Most of india is pretty much living in poverty. My friend just came back from visiting India and he said it was so depressing to see the way they live.
