first sorry for being late on this reply (mid-terms
). but to sproogle...yeah sorta. I mean there was a time when this stuff was un-exeptable. guts and gore, sex and scandel...you just couldnt expose it to any one with the exeption "questionable litterary works" lol. but now it is every where. it has snuck in here and there and made us indiferent to it.
the old men on the hill know that it is every where and that every will be exposed to it at sometime. I think they are just trying to extend to those who have been there before (namely the parents) the conrolled conditions of exposure that children need.
Information taken out of context, is at best useless and at worste dangerous. this would afford parents the oppertunity to get in on that world that there kids like to keep them out of...to be more involved and give guidence. these games can do harm....
if a 6 year old is playing vice city with his older brother, do you really think the older brother at some point will puase the game to have a talk with his kid bro about the difference between fiction and reallity, and how doing these things in the reall world will get him oin trouble and cuase people real pain? No lmao! the brady bunch is not your average americian family lol!
more likely that same older sibling will show is lil' bro' how to pick up a prostitute, and drive into an allley to score some extra health points... and where are the moms and dads? this kid bought the game probably after asking for a few bucks from his parents and heading down to the mall... I am sure there wouldnt be some big discustion on it. I am even more sure that most parents dont even know about the rating sytem on games.
all they know is that the more time that kid spends in his room the less he is cocking an additude with them. and that they can get him to take out the trash real quick if they threaten to turn it off before he saves lol.
but if they have to go down there with em' to get the game...they will be confronted with its content. and will be forced to make an informed decition about it. I notice that noone seems to care if they cant play mario bros lol. but threaten to take away that sames kids privellage to cuase chaos and mayham, letting loose wantent descruction on a fictional world and going on killing sprees and the like and they through a tantrum!
it is addictive. and it is becuase of the way it makes you feel. you feel impowered by it. you know that if an aspect of game play displeases you, you can off the offending npc...and any one else you feel like. what is idiotic is thinking for one second that when a kid gets pissed at some one after having played that for a good two hours he or she doesnt mentally put a gun to the head of the offending party and quietly say to them selves "bang".
when you think about any thing to long it starts sounding like a good idea lol. most of us have an inability to forsee consequence now adays well enough to prevent us from at one point in time seriously thinking about doing something which is simpley not done amongst the civilized with out severe reprecutions.
as my english 50 instructor has infromed us about the poor judgment of charectors in many litterary works " they dont think ahead, they only look back with regrets...hinsight is crystal clear"... I say take for instance the narator of E.A poe's story "The tell tale heart" he rationalized his clearly insane actions at every step. he obseses over"the evil eye", he lets his "sickness" get the better of him. he ends up killing the old man on acount of (what most scholars believe poe was striving to say without saying) the effects of end stage sypillious(or how ever you spell that), over some form of cateracts in an old man.....
it was a stupid idea...but the narrator thought on it...it became more and more rational for him. I am saying that just like that guy in poes story or espinosa in the gosple according to mark(not the biblical text but a story that draws parellels) they are plagued by something...it is an out side influence that effects their minds when they let it. and this stuff can be dangerous if not properly watched over.
