I've noticed that there are alot of people in the clan that enjoy debating, so I figured I would start up a debate competition. You will be paired off and must win your debate to advance to the next round. I will create a topic and the title will be the competitor's names. Only those who have their name in the title will be able to post there, please don't post if the debate isn't yours. I'm still deciding on how I'm going to produce debate topics, I might let the pairs decide what they want to debate each other on for the first round. Just remember, I chose the topic of your debate after the first round grnwink.gif

Who can join?
- Anyone who wants to debate in a mature and respectful way.

Who is scoring my match up?
- I will be scoring your debates, the scoring rubric will be discussed below.

Can I be a judge?
- Sorry, I'm judging this competition to make sure it will be 100% fair, no bias from the judges.

How does this work?
- You choose your topic for round one and pick your stance. Your opponent must pick the opposite stance, meaning you can't both argue the same side.

The competition will work like this :

- After your topic is created, go the one with your name in it and start the debate. You will have one week to complete the debate. Like a court case, you may "rest" and then your competition will be over. If you rest, your other competitor will be allowed one more post after you rest your side of the debate. (This does not mean you have quit and you will not lose any points for resting)

- You must pick one side of the topic and only argue for or against it. Your opponent will have to argue for the other side. (If you argue for the topic, they must argue against it).

- You will be scored based on the content you use as evidence to prove your argument. I will quote your posts, then add in red numbers into your debate which will be your points earned.

- Whoever has the most points after the week is over or after you rest your argument, will win. This person will advance to the final round.

Grading Rubric
Ways to gain points:
- Provide factual evidence, give a link to your source for five extra points.
- Use mature arguments.
- Respect your opponent's views and disagree in a professional manner.
- Spell check and use correct grammar, try not to use too much short-hand.
- Did I mention maturity?

Ways to lose points:
- Cussing in your post. Don't even use the word filter, I don't want to see stars.
- Insulting your opponent. (Will most likely result in your opponent winning the match after the week is over)
- Using fake evidence and lack of research.

Final Round Debate Topic: Should gay marriage be legalized in society?

Reward for winning : The winner will have the debate forum named after them for one month. (ex: Rylkan's Debate Forum)

Current Debaters:
1) Spikeout
2) Cspace2
3) Gotenksjr3
4) Kaezion
5) Leftyy
6) Mobster101
7) Nighthawk551

A supreme judicial office can be fickle and more biased than more than...

I dislike the idea, because debating is not a game. It's getting your point across and making sure you're heard...I don't like it personally. Don't expect to see me doing it.

After all of the debates in the debate forum, I figured this would be a good way to let them compete in an event for a reward. Just a fun thing to do, not sure why you seem upset by it. It has nothing to do with your court system like you said on Aim conf.gif

Actually Debating is quite often a game, most schools run a debating program, and so do many other places.

Sounds like fun to me, I'll give it a go.

If you're not joining, why post here?

It sounds good to me, and fun too. Just that there's potential for flaming. Will it be head to head, like an elimination tournament?

Yep, I will put you guys in pairs like a normal tournament. Flaming won't be allowed as said in the ways to lose points or be disqualified.

Didn't read what I said before, did you?...A debate is to get your point across...I just did now. You debate every day, atleast twenty times, even if you don't talk much.

Why did I post here?...Because I can? Because I have free access to SeeD? Because it is my community? You have your answers. They always were there, you just had to look.

This topic was about a competition for those who are interested, not for a person to get mad at me for it being related to their Court Idea, which it clearly doesn't relate except for the term "Judge" and "Rest", which is being used in a debate competition so I can determine a winner. This competition doesn't include a legal judge, a jury, a court room, a crime committed, or a suspect Whatever_anim.gif

For those interested in a Debate Competition, just post here thumb.gif

sign me up. TheSmile.gif

one question, though. you and i have sort of debated on the final round topic (gay marriage) before, baseball, and we sort of have a bad history. is that going to affect the judging? for instance, your stance on certain topics might influence your judgement. i'm not saying that you're necessarily biased; i'm saying, your heartfelt views on a certain topic might subconsciously affect your grading. if not, forget what i just said Flush.gif

Nope, I'm only grading based on how you conduct your debate and the evidence you provide. Plus, I don't have anything against you anyways grnwink.gif
