Question About choosing light or dark

Can those of a specialized class like druid or elementalist choose to be the light side or dark side to get benefits from their race? Say you choose to be an elememtalist, but wish to gain the benefits of the elves of the arcane +10 Intelligence. This probably conflicts with storyline or soemthin' which is okay, I'm just wondering.
