It is a poorly operated and managed network anyway. Try using the alternate link that is on the page.

There is a link above the applet that says

That one is somewhat lighter and should run on more systems. The main applet doesn't usually work unless you're running a recent version of Java. Both chats, however, go to the same network, meaning that you will be able to chat with those on the main applet even when you're on the lighter one.
