While both are correct:
A) Hyperfried answered first.
B) You did not give a detailed answer.
Hyperfried is correct!

Explanation Rule
In order to avoid people simply taking answers from the internet and solving the riddle without any thinking involved, you must justify your answer with explanations of how (or how the site you got the answer from ) you (or the site) came to that answer.

36?
because twice meant two times.
4 and 20 is 24.
a quater of 24 is six.
and six time two is twelve.
so 48-12 is 36.
am i right?

Well, it is 36, as Pendragon said, but hopefully I can explain it a tad more thoroughly.

When it says "twice four and twenty blackbirds", it basically means that it is twice the sum of twenty and four. This could be modeled as this expression: 2(4+20) Also, it adds "I shot and killed a quarter of them How many do remain?" So, basically, it is saying that, once simplifying this original expression, we will multiply the product by 1/4, or quarter it. This can be explained in this expression: 0.25[2(4+20)] So, we simplify. We first add together 20 and 4, giving us 24. We then multiply that by 2, giving us 48. And finally, multiplying that by 0.25, we get 36.

I think me streak just ended. sad.gif

I cannot take Ruckus' answer into account as he did not explain his result. Hyperfried and Pendragon205 are both incorrect.

Oh! I see what I did wrong, I think. bluetongue.gif

First, it says "twice four", which could be shown in the expression 2x4. Then, "and twenty", basically, you'll add 20. So, we now have (2x4)+20. And then, "I shot and killed a quarter of them. How many do remain?" In doing this, we will remove 1/4 from the sum. So, we come out with 3/4[(2x4)+20] as our expression. Now, we simplify. I'll show my steps.

First, we multiply 2x4. This gives us 3/4(8+20). Then, we add 8 and 20, giving us this: 3/4(28). Finally, we multiply 28 by 3/4, giving us 21 blackbirds.

So, in conclusion, 21 blackbirds remain.

I've got it now. TheSmile.gif Okay...

First, it says "twice four", which could be shown in the expression 2x4. Then, "and twenty", basically, you'll add 20. So, we now have (2x4)+20. We'll solve this, and get 28. Now, "I shot and killed a quarter of them. How many do remain?" You kill a quarter of the birds, which is seven of them. However, if you start shooting at birds, they'll fly off. The dead birds are right in front of you, and they're the only ones left.

So, the answer is seven birds.

oh, that's ok, but i think i got it.
4 and 20 is 24, and 24 twice is 48.
one fourth of 48 is 12, and as hyper said, if you shoot, they'd all fly away. so only the dead ones would be left, which makes there be only 12 left.
so is it 12?

*smiles* oh, cmon people, its easy.

there wont be any left. after youve shot the quarter, the rest will have flown off. although why the rest didnt fly off when the first was killed is beyond me. so, if youre talking about live birds, the answer is none. however, if youre counting the dead birds, then the answer is 12.

Since, after shooting 1/4 of the birds, the rest will fly off, the answer should be either (2*(4+20))/4=12 or ((2*4)+20)/4=7. Hyperfried, being the first to EXPLAIN and answer, is correct.

a family? because a family's roots go back and back and back, but you cant see them
so they are tall but not visible.
and it never gets bigger because people in it die
