how did it get to this point in the first place, he must have done something to spark this chaos

Think back to ~10 years ago (give or take a few), when he settled (with a different family) out-of-court on molestation charges. Most people think he paid off the family to avoid a trial (because obviously he didn't want to go to prison).

Fast forward to the present, and another family comes in claiming the same thing. People think "hey, he must have been guilty last time, so he must be guilty now." And that's how it goes.
