Engaging Conversation?
#1
Posted 30 July 2005 - 08:02 AM
I've recently started to think about something. What makes a conversation work? What triggers make a conversational memorable? Is a conversation better if it's fun, or if you learn from it? Or, better yet, if you learnfrom it, is it fun?
If you don't mind, I'd like to do a little research on the topic. If you participate I will be asking for a small piece of your private life.
I will be asking you to send me a private message regarding the most engagin conversation you ever had. I will ask for this for a group, and for a one on one conversation. If you are okay with this, proceed.
-----------------------
Alright, I'll move on. No topic in this is taboo, and all information is kept private. I'll jot down the key points I need, and delete it. I will never mention your personal stories to anyone, or anything. I will keep all notes written (Impersonal, but still) as a hidden file locked away amongst hidden, locked folders in random locations, on my personal computer. Nobody will ever see this.
After I've collected data, I may write a report, or share my statistics. If data is hard to come by (people don't want to share) I may have to do a survey. I don't like surveys, because they put words in your mouths and make you say them.
Now, if everything is good, you can send me your information as a private message OR email, with the topic "Conversation Data" Feel free to change names, etc..
Remember, you are sending me two conversations: 1: The most engaging conversation you've had one on one,
and 2: The most engaging conversation you've had with 2 or more other people.
Thank you for your time, all.
(PS: If you want a trade off, I'll send you mine. I want people of all ages, and if you want to contribute to my research futher, please add an age or age group)
Thanks all ^_^

Hehe I'll gladly do this survey... although it might be hard... do you want just one specific conversation topic with detail or like just several conversation topics? It might be hard for me if it's just one topic since I just remember heaps of conversations... not many stick out like a sore thumb.
^^ Thanks Ayumi, you rock!! ^^

Well.. two reasons are what I have for doing this, really...
1: Personal interest. I have a theory on what makes conversation interesting, but I need proof to back it up.
2: My first year of University (not this year, but next, if I go straight in) will involve psychology and sociology. I could use this for an essay.
Just send in your most memorable conversations...

i dont think he cares. and as for the conversation, first, pick a topic you both know.
then, one person say one thing. the next say another, either agreeing, disagreeing, or just plain saying something else. repeat step 3 until the topic has been descussed out. then pick a new topic. repeat everything. including this at the end.

This was totally out-dated.
Now it's updated.
I think?
Yeah.
....
Nice.
