The Cafeteria is for the following...
- Personal milestone threads (like those relating to post count)... However, board milestones such as records being broken can be posted in GD.
- Quoted chat logs
- Sig and avatar related threads (in the Sig Center, within the Cafeteria)
- Poll-centered threads (unless the poll is significant)
******************************
All other topics intended to be posted in a general forum should go into General Discussion.

QUOTE
- "Conversation threads" (I've rarely seen them on our forums)
Lol, Cspace can't read other posts, so he just posts randomly hoping that he's on topic. Explains a lot.
"Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow."

It's not really the fault of the members, the intended use of the boards seems to have changed over time.
Anyway, from what I've seen the reason they haven't been merged is that then people would have to look through all the 'pointless' topics people would be posting in General Discussion, such as birthdays, 'I got 3682 posts, w00t', and the like. Right now that kind of stuff can go in the Cafeteria, the moment we got rid of the Cafeteria people would start whinging that those kind of things shouldn't be posted because it was spammy. Especially you two, Biggy and Den.
I believe Conversation threads are when people more or less hold a conversation through posts rather than IM. Tends to involve people posting back and forth a fair bit about something, as opposed to a discussion which is more 'consider, post once, come back in a day or so and maybe post again'. I'm explaining it badly, but you can see the difference when you look at both.

I added a link to this in the GD Forum Rules thread.
