I was making a roleplay description on a rp site, and I think I kinda over did it. I made a realllyyy long background. Read at your own risk! It's quite long bluetongue.gif I'll give you a cookie if you do read the whole thing, though! And if you give me some feedback and help me make it better, you'll be much appreciated. And I don't want feedback saying, "Make it shorter." because that's the info I needed to put in, even if I did elaborate a bit icon_sweatdrop.gif

Background
Arendar came from the land of Arrevin, a land far across the seas. His father was a Master at one of the most esteemed combat academies on the continent. His mother was also a Master, and his sister and twin brother were Apprentices. He and his brother were almost Masters as well, with only a few last missions left before they were sent to take the Test. The Academy trained its students as elemental warriors, some specializing more in combat and some more in magic. Daran specialized in combat, while Arendar specialized in magic. He had known that he and his brother would be Tested on the same day; they had been accepted as students to the Academy on the same day, being chosen at the same exact time. They had advanced from Student to Apprentice on the same day as well. But they were not sent on the same missions, so he was not with Daran when he fell into Darkness.

Arendar had been slightly afraid for his brother when he was told that Daran was being sent to destroy the Dark Crystal. He had heard of its power, and, being the man who sought knowledge at all costs, immediately went to research on it. One passage he read showed the true power of it.

"The Demon Gem is one of the evilest and most powerful artifacts in the world still existing. It dates back since before the Cataclysm, before the Chaos War, all the way back to the time of the Queen of Darkness. It was forged by the Dark Queen to turn important generals of light to her side, where she could easily manipulate them or kill them. She found this to be much more successful than torture, and she thoroughly enjoyed having the turned people destroy their loved ones.

The Demon Gem is not the only one of its kind. As the Dark Queen attempted to perfect her creation, she discarded several earlier experiments, many of which had had strange side effects, wore off over a period of time, or gave the victim back their free will once the Gem was removed from his or her possession. The Gems were still very dangerous, and many were taken by evil beings and used to do what the Dark Queen did, even though they were less effective.

The Demon Gem, and all of its earlier counterparts, all had one major flaw, though. The victim had to be-"

There was a large rip in the page, and he could not read about the flaw. More was on the next page.

"The Demon Gem, and its many counterparts, have been known by many names of the two centuries since it was created. These include the Dark Crystal, the Demon Crystal, the Gem of Darkness, the Dark Gem, and the Gem of the Queen. If ever mentioned, stay away from them.

Most of the Gem's counterparts have been destroyed, but it is believed that the Demon Gem still exists, slipping away of its enemies and finding its way into the hands of those who will exploit it for evil. The-

There was another large tear, and the next page was about another object of evil. This did little to ease Arendar's discomfort, since now he knew exactly what danger his brother faced.

When his brother returned home, saying the Gem was destroyed, Arendar was immediately relieved. But something seemed different about his brother. He seemed more secluded, never talking to Arendar, and when he did manage to talk to him, he snapped at him in a strange unnatural voice. Arendar wondered if Daran had been wounded during his journey, and had been too stubborn with his own pride to go seek aid.

But all of these thoughts were washed away as Arendar and Daran received their warning that they were to be Tested the next day. Arendar immediately began practicing all that he knew, making sure that he had every single one of his spells memorized to perfection.

The next day came, and Arendar and his twin brother entered the Testing Chamber. After the four hours of the test, Arendar and Daran walked out of the Chamber as Masters. But Arendar had noticed something odd in the Masters who had been presiding over the Test. One, called Master Oricanth, had been watching Daran intently the whole time. Arendar resolved to use an eavesdropping spell on Oricanth which would make it so that he could hear everything Oricanth and everyone around him said as if he were there, except for the fact that he could not see any of it.

A short day later, a voice came to him through the magic of the spell that was very much familiar. His brother!

"Congratulations on your passing of the Test, Master Morgreshar," Oricanth said, putting emphasis on 'Master'.
"Thank you, Master Oricanth," responded his brother's voice in the strange unnatural voice.
"But be wary, my dear friend. Now that you have passed the Test, Master Yraligi will approach you. He will attempt to pull you into the web of lies and treachery that almost all of the Masters now live by," said Oricanth's voice.
"What are you talking about?" said Daran's voice, but it didn't sound the least bit surprised.
"I was watching you, dear boy, during your test, and I found that you had exceptional talent and skill. Skill enough to destroy this Academy, which has turned into an attack base on Arrevin. You don't need to follow the instructions of the fools who run this place anymore. I don't want someone with such potential as you to become like them."

Arendar knew that Oricanth had to be using some sort of magic spell on Daran to convince him of this, since he didn't seem to be disbelieving at all. He started to try to think what Oricanth was trying to do, but stopped after a few minutes when he realized that the conversation was still going on, and that he had missed quite a bit of it.

"What would you have me do, Master Oricanth?" said Daran's voice.
"You must purge this Academy. Take the lives of every Apprentice, Student, and Master. I'm afraid you'll need to kill your family as well. Already has your brother been taken into this treacherous web, and your sister won't be far behind once she becomes a Master. The other Masters are already starting to spread this seed of evil to the Apprentices and Students, so you'll need to kill everyone before they can do more harm. Then we will start a new order, and we will rule Arrevin."
"Very well," came Daran's voice, and then several echoing footsteps.

"Master Morgreshar?" came a voice that pulled Arendar back to reality.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I must be going," he said, quickly standing and rushing out of the room. He had to find someone... He had to warn them that Daran was going to try to kill them. He had to find their parents! He quickly turned in the other direction, heading for the Morgreshar offices. He turned another quick corner, the door of the offices in his sight, merely a few yards away.

"So, my dear brother, are you off to spread your treacherous lies and deceit to more innocent Apprentices?" It was Daran's voice, but it was cruel and sarcastic. Arendar swiftly turned around.

"Daran! Please, you must not listen to the lies of Oricanth! He seeks to destroy us to take control of Telanidor. You can't let him do that!" Arendar said, pleading with his brother.

"Sorry, dear brother, but I can see through your foolish lies. You can't fool me. I will destroy you, and purge this Academy!" Daran drew his longsword and shortswords that were at his waist and lunged forward. Arendar's staff glowed a violent blue, and a protective shield of magic glowed in front of him. Daran's weapons collided with it, and immediately he was shoved off his feet onto the ground.

Daran lifted his feet into the air and jumped upright, tossing his shortsword from his right hand to his left, so that he was holding both weapons in his left. He raised up his right hand and pointed the palm, with fingers straight, at Arendar.

"Dumenak!" he yelled in the language of magic. A great fireball flew from his hand and collided which the shield, with immediately splintered and shredded, throwing Arendar backwards onto the wall a few feet away from the door. He was still standing, but the breath had been knocked out of him. He struggled to breath for several seconds.

Daran took his chance and lunged forward, the shortsword back in his right hand. The longsword was stretched out, aimed for Arendar's heart, and a second later it penetrated Arendar's unarmored chest. The shortsword came forward, and it penetrated just centimeters below the longsword. Blood poured freely out of the wounds, staining the red robe to an even darker red. The blades had gone straight through his chest, going into the wall behind him.

Daran yanked the weapons free, and ran another direction, searching for his next target. He didn't need to go far, since a moment later, Arendar heard a scream. Then he heard quick footsteps coming towards him, and then his world went black.

Arendar opened his eyes, seeing before him a glowing light. It blinded him, and he could see nothing else. Am I dead? he thought. He had to be, of course. Nobody could have survived those wounds. His eyes began adjusting, and his ears began working. He heard the crackling of flames, and he saw that the light before him was a fire. A burning pain resonated from his chest and consumed his body, but he managed to sit up.

A man cloaked in black robes with a dark hood making it so that he could not see his face sat before him. The man, even with his foreboding appearance, had a kind demeanour, and Arendar was not afraid of him at all.

"Where am I?" Arendar asked weakly.

"You are on the Mountain of Ice. That is the Academy." The man pointed eastward, away from the mountain. Arendar followed his finger and saw a burning inferno miles away, yells of pain able to be heard even from their distance coming from it.

"Who are you?" Arendar asked.

"Who I am is not important. You must flee from this land, flee across the oceans to another land. There you must find your brother and make him right again. You are still injured, but not as badly. If you do not strain yourself, it will heal over time. I will give you means to travel across the seas. Much lies on your shoulders. Many lives are at stake if you do not succeed."

"But how am I to know how to help him? I don't even know what's wrong with him!" Arendar said in an exasperated voice. "And he couldn't have crossed the oceans already. It can't have been that long since he started the attack; people are still being killed down there."

"You will know what to do when you find him," the man said. "As for your other question, you are right. It has been three days since he almost killed you. And he is still down there now, making sure all are killed. He will be sent across the seas in three months time, and then you will need to start your search. But you will need to cross the oceans now, so that you will know the land and so that he does not find you while you are still here."

"Very well, you seem to have answered every single flaw in your plan I've seen," Arendar said. "If I need to cross now, how will I get across?"

"You will travel on the back of a griffon. Your travel bags were fetched from your rooms, and your provisions have been filled. You must make haste. The griffon will be arriving..." he waited. "Now."

A great flapping of wings from the skies alerted Arendar. He looked up quickly, and the griffon came down softly onto the ground. He had never seen anything so magnificent. It was sleek and shiny and proud.

"Go now. Make haste."

Arendar didn't waste time. He agilely climbed onto the griffon's back and held onto it by lacing his arms around its neck. It didn't waste time either. As soon as its rider was secure on its back, it leaped into the air, catching the wind currents with its powerful wings....
