Australia goes from Prep (start around 5 years old) then to year 1... all the way to year 12 (18ish years old). Total of 13 years ...
NZ goes from Year 1 to year 13, Same set up as above, 13 years of schoolingness
Um, Then you've got university afterwards, for more learningness..
Eh, Ill leave it to others to elaborate on school...

Just for the heck of it, I'll explain the american system to NZers...
Kindergarden: Start when you're five, its basically 0th grade :\
From here we have two different systems, depending on where you live.
1.
Grade 1-5: Elementary School
Grade 6-8: Middle School
Grade 9-12: High School
2.
Grade 1-6: Elementary School
Grade 7-9: Jr. High
Grade 10-12: High school
YOu graduate high school when you're 18-ish, and then you either have 4 year blocks of Collage. Most people only stay in collage for 8 years, as thats plenty for a good job.

Referring to Xal's post, most are changing to the 1st order from the 2nd. The 2nd is usually found in rural areas, and the 1st in urban/suburban areas. Back in our parents' day, the 2nd was the most common.
IMO, the first is the better system. THe sooner you get into a high school enviroment, the better.

Explain like the time block, extracuricular activities, fun stuff, bad stuff, and anything you do want to explain about the school system down under.
time block: My school = 8.45 registration, 9.00 - 10.00 first period, 10-11 second period 11-11.30 interval, 11.30-12.30 3rd period, 12.30-1.15 lunch, 1.15-2.15 4th period, 2.15-3.15 5th period, 3.15 home

extra-curricular: you name it they do it. They even have some RP group and they leave their stuff in the commerce dept. and it looks awfully weird

Fun stuff: Same as what you have in the US, your mates

bad stuff: ^^ prolly the same

And I'll let Jonny explain the school system cos even I don't get the lower year stuff

The time blocks of classes vary throughout all the schools... really up to them.
As for our timetable... Hehe.. Here is my 2005 one [Year 11]:

Heh. Our school had to make it all weird 'n stuff.
Stupid school.
Yes. I walk around with ^^ in my pocket
Hehe prettyful
Oh, and for Co-curricular stuff, they make us play Interschool sport on wednesday afternoons, and you've gotta do House Performance (like a theatrical type of thing) or do community service, Stuff like that
Meh, i cant complain too much about school... For some reason, im actually wanting to go back to school
Evil holidays.. Too exposed to family
Meh.

Jeez Spike you seem to want to become an Aussie or a Kiwi at this rate. Kiwi Slang, asking me about some NZ stuff and then now this topic.
Kindergarten: 3-5 Years old
Primary School: Year 0-6
Intermediate School: Year 7-8
Secondary School: Year 9-13
University: After Secondary School if you get good grades. =P
Basically, when you start primary school you either start as a Year 1 or a Year 0. You become a Year 0 if you turned 5 after June/July or you become a Year 1 if you turned 5 before June/July. Really I believe it's if you joined school either in the first two or last two terms of the school year.
School of course starts in late January/early February (Summer) and then finishes in early December. We have four terms per school year and each term is on average, about 10 weeks. Sometimes they might be 9 weeks but then there'll be a term with 11 weeks to compliment it but usually the last term is short without the third being longer.
Me and Cal are going to be Year 11's this year! That means 2 more years of school after and we can wear pants instead of shorts!!

I just realised something... On my timetable, most of the places that say spare actually used to be my maths class... But since Year 12 classes finish in october, Those classes became spares
Hehe.. Some classes; Like cisco networking (which Goto, Darkie, And others did) give you a whole bunch of spares
But they had to stay back till 5:30 on tuesday afternoones
