If you put cold coffee (In a mug) in a bowl and surround it with ice, then put it in a microwave, the coffee doesn't heat up and the ice doesn't melt eek4.gif

Yeah, saw it on TV a while ago... Although, I can't remember if that's it. It might be if you put hot ice in a mug and surround it with hot coffee, the ice cools down and the coffee heats up icon_sweatdrop.gif

In order for water to be supercooled, it needs to be in a very clean and "smooth" container and it needs to be quite pure:

EXACTLY the same as superheating. Except in a microwave, of course grnwink.gif

That's odd. I'm sure Newton's law of cooling gets blown out of the water. bluetongue.gif

We JUST covered this in science yesterday.
Warm water evaporates faster, which cools the rest of the water really fast. The temperature of the hot water just plunges straight down due to evaporative cooling bluetongue.gif

Basic Chemistry Big bluetongue.gif

Chemical reactions or phase changes either absorb or give off energy lol.

Well... No, that's not really an explanation in this case. bluetongue.gif

Both are completely water before and after freezing, so they're both changes in phase rather than endothermic or exothermic reactions. The hot water has a higher energy level to begin with, and so must release more energy in order to become a solid. Inks' explanation certainly sounds plausible, so I'll believe that.

It was an add-on to Inks's explanation bluetongue.gif
