This is just an early mention of a longterm contest that could potentially be held. It is a contest from the CurvedSpace side of things for those who are creative and wish to mess around with simple programming concepts... No prior knowledge is necessary, and the program for doing this is free.

So what exactly is this about?

This is a contest for those who think they can make an RPG. To put everyone on a level playing field, the RPGs must be done with the RPG Toolkit, a great introductory game engine and editor for RPGs. It is open-source and free to use, and while it may seem confusing at first, it is relatively simple and one can actually make a good-looking sprite RPG without much knowledge of programming.

This would be a contest on the grounds of creativity and implementation, and should be fun for those who are creative. A decent amount of time will be given for everyone to make an RPG of their own, and then when the time comes, they will be made available somehow on CurvedSpace and everyone can vote for their favorite (and the voting will take place over an extended time so they can be properly evaluated). In the end there will be some pretty big rewards, to go along with your own creation.

This contest is not finalized and we're trying to assess how much interest there is in it.

So feel free to check out the RPG Toolkit, and if you have comments or are interested in a contest like this, please reply.

That does sound like a lot of fun. I'd definitely be interested in it.

It does sound like fun, but there's a chance I won't be able to make it work icon_sweatdrop.gif . You said it takes knowledge of programming, about how much knowledge would that be?
This was totally out-dated.
Now it's updated.
I think?

It doesn't require any. Prior knowledge will help, but since it's its own language (and it's fairly simple), it shouldn't be difficult to figure out. The programming is for the stuff with which you interact in the game, but a ton of the engine is done without programming.

Heh, if anyone remembers the attempted Summer Project Xal put together last summer, I was in that, and we were using RPG Toolkit. I couldn't really figure it out, but I didn't put too much effort into it either. I didn't really like how I couldn't figure out how to make my own sprites and building things and stuff, and I figured that if I could it wouldn't look to good, and I didn't like the default ones much bluetongue.gif

On their site, check the resources section. There's a bit there that everyone is free to use if they don't wish to create tiles.

I'd be interested in helping debug or test the different RPGs. I'd also be interested in judging, if there are available slots for that bluetongue.gif

I doubt I'd get around to actually making a game, but it'd sure be fun to play around with those that others made. bluetongue.gif

And it looked like everybody was voting for their favourites Ratz, so there wouldn't be judging.

Cres had quite a good RPG in the works a few years ago, but I don't think it was made using the RPG Toolkit, so I'm not sure it would count for him to enter that.
