^I didn't quite understand that^

I'm probably going to have to agree that the name changing is confusing, so it should be stopped.

To me, trying to illustrate your point through provocation and controversy is just going to weaken the consideration that others give to your opinion, and even possibly to harm your reputation. While you certainly aren't expected to agree with everything that happens, this is not the way in which to show that.

Is that where you got your name or did you just see it on Google? bluetongue.gif I googled your name once too and saw the links to the game one (never seen the game anywhere else though bluetongue.gif).

That's where I got my name bluetongue.gif

I was playing it with some friends from way back then and it reminds me of that party we had and we beat Spikeout in the arcade bluetongue.gif

QUOTE(Cspace @ Feb 17 2006, 09:31 PM)

When it comes to the situation that sparked this thread, we can't hold names from which members change.  While I may not agree with the exact circumstances of the change, "Kaiser" is a common alias on the internet.  I even think Crescens went by a Kaiser name at one time or another here.  Icarus' AIM screen name also includes "Kaiser".  "Kaiser" often is referred to as "emperor" or "king" which is why it's not uncommon.

Okay, I'm siding with CSpace II on this one. If someone is already or has once before used a name, it should be that alone. It causes to much confusion to think every post "Okay, which CSpace or which Kaiser is this?" It's just too much.

Plus, it's just plain annoying.

KaiserMike: *ahem* I feel stupid.

KaiserMike: Valerie, this is the part where you disagree and say “No you’re not!”
Valerie419: …. Oh, crap! I’m sorry, I wasn’t listening! …. Oops.

I agree that it's annoying, however, we cannot expect every newcomer to know every member here upon registering.

What if, for example, we had a member called "Legolas". This is an active member, someone who has been here for a while, and a friend to all (except maybe Crescens ShiftyEyes_anim.gif ). As we all know, there are many thousands of Legolas's (Legoli biglaugh.gif ) on the internet. I'll go through a couple scenarios with this basis:

1) What if a newcomer registered under his, uh, Maplestory name, which happens to be "Legolas321". So now we have two simultaneously active Legoli™ on our site. Are we to enforce "one identity per one person" (no two members named after the same character or idea), a rule I've only seen on roleplaying sites, or just allow anyone to register any unique name?

"One identity per one person" would become a much bigger annoyance than just allowing unique names of any appropriate subject. What if, in your case for example, there happened to be another "Valerie" on the site before you?

Especially on a clan/guild site like ours, members frequently like to use their in-game names. "One identity per one person" would be a bit of an unnecessary problem for some who use known characters or cliches in-game who would, in effect, need to alter their identity here in order to be accepted.

2) "Legolas" gets tired of being associated with an elf on a site full of dwarves (don't ask me where that came from, because I don't know crazy.gif ), so he manages to get his name changed to "Aragorn" (who happens to be better than Legolas anyway grnwink.gif ). So then, later on, someone either registers as or changes to the name "Legolas". So here's the question: Did the first "Legolas" claim a second name, or did he change his name?

To get a name change, the item is called "Change Username", with the description, "Give yourself a new username". It's not a "Claim A Second Identity" item, for it does not protect the original name. There are too many circumstances for that to be realistically enforced to the community's benefit (such as "Legolas321" changing to "Legolas", a new member coming who didn't know it was previously taken, or whatever else). It's impossible to judge intentions on the internet with the lack of body language, inflection, emotion, or many other aspects of communication, so having a rule about it is dangerous because it could be abused or misinterpreted.

So unless a member is obviously impersonating someone, with a copied profile or subtle variation of an existing name, we cannot protect names from which a member changes or based on the uniqueness of a character or idea used. It may be a jerky thing for someone to willingly steal someone else's name, but it doesn't mean that something can necessarily be done to reverse it from the admin standpoint.

*****************************************************

In the case of Kaiser Mike, he changed his username. Then Icarus took it, who also happens to have "Kaiser" in his AIM screen name (and that was before the change). So there is that element of doubt. To increase that doubt, since "Kaiser" can mean "emperor" or "king", it is very common in online aliases. Even Crescens, another one of our mods, had "Kaiser" in his name at one time way back (unless I'm mistaken).

It would be a dangerous precedent to set if we were to enforce this. As Kimo said, possibly from experience... bluetongue.gif

*****************************************************

However, if Icarus would like to, hm, redeem himself in this regard, I can give him another name change item to change to a more legitimate name, and if Mike would like the name "Kaiser" back, I can send him a name change item as well.

This is an exception made for this situation only, and with the price of name changes so high now (and the item possibly removed entirely in the future), I don't see this being much of an issue after this situation.

Actually, I believe Crescens name was "KaiserDragonRyu" from the Breath of Fire series.

And I'm all for letting Icarus keep the name. It's not -my- name, so I can't call it.

It's just annoying as hell to see someone with a previously used (And kinda well known) name to be seen running around turning out to be someone else entirely.
Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position.
Such a heavy burden now to be "The One".
