Glad to hear you're getting it.
Just to sum up: Prophecies and Factions each take place on a different continent, Tyria and Cantha respectively. You can only go to each continent if you have that game. But there's also an area that overlaps for both, called the Battle Isles. The Battle Isles is where most of the PvP arenas are, and where the Guild Halls are. So you can still hang out at the hall or PvP with people that own different games to you, but you'll miss out on being able to go questing with them. Then again it sounds like the bulk of the guild is getting Factions, so that probably isn't a major issue.
I'd recommend picking up both eventually, but I'm guessing Ari is right about the original game coming down in price. Oh, and if you have both games (and link the accounts together) then you can send your Factions characters over to the Prophecies areas, and so forth.
