Dropping Ettins:
By: Andrew (Nemisis Valor/Capozide)

Well, I just wanted to contribute this little build I use to the guild for kicks. Anyways, I enjoy using this build, it has gotten me a lot of money and I usually use it whenever Europe doesn't have favour.

Back to the point, this build was made to do one thing -- smash Gypsie Ettins before they smash you. It was meant to solo Ettins.

I'll start with the attributes, skills, desired equipment, and then strategy.

Attributes

Earth Magic - 16 (12 + 3 + 1)
Energy Storage - 13/15 (12 + 1/3)
Air Magic - 4

Attribute Points Spent: 200
Attribute Points Left: 0

Well, that's it for attributes, it's pretty straight up, and I hope you have done both 15 attribute point quests. Also, since this uses Energy Storage, it is only optimal for Elementalist primaries (sorry secondaries).

Skills

NOTE: Some of these skills you MUST purchase. They cannot be acquired as quest rewards. Dakk in Ember Light Camp should have all the skills you need (besides Elemental Attunement, you have to capture that in Perdition Rock [right outside of Ember Light Camp]).

The blue numbers represent energy cost, yellow numbers represents casting time, orange numbers are for recharge. Note that 3/4 means 3/4 of a second casting time.

Stone Daggers 5 1
Spell. Send out two Stone Daggers. Each Stone Dagger strikes target foe for 25 if it hits. (Attrib: Earth Magic)

Whirlwind 10 3/4 8
Spell. All adjacent foes take 24 cold damage. Attacking foes struck by Whirlwind are knocked down. (Attrib: Air Magic)

Aftershock 10 3/4 10
Spell. Adjacent foes are struck for 105 earth damage. Knocked down foes are struck for 72 additional earth damage. (Attrib: Earth Magic)

Armor of Earth 10 3/4 15
Enchantment Spell. For 30 seconds, you gain 62 armor, but move 12% slower. (Attrib: Earth Magic)

Kinetic Armor 15 3 60
Enchantment Spell. For 8 seconds, you gain +84 armor. Whenever you cast a Spell, Kinetic Armor is renewed for 8 seconds. (Attrib: Earth Magic)

Aura of Restoration 10 3/4 20
Enchantment Spell. For 60 seconds, you are healed 367% of the Energy cost each time you cast a Spell. (Attrib: Energy Storage)

Earth Attunement 10 2 60
Enchantment Spell. For 62 seconds you are attuned to earth. You gain 30% of the base Energy cost of the skill each time you use Earth Magic. (Attrib: Earth Magic)

Elemental Attunement [Elite] 10 2 60
Elite Enchantment Spell. For 45 seconds, you are attuned to Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. You gain 50% of the base Energy cost of the skill each time you use magic associated with any of these elements.

Well, there's your skillbar setup. I recommend putting the skills on the bar in this order. It should look something like this.

user posted image

You can look on GuildWiki for any skills you have questions about, and I must note, some of these are buy-only skills, so sorry if you actually have to spend some money on buying skills -- you have to spend money to make money.

I've had some people tell me that a simple variant of the build - I.E. removing one of the armor spells and adding in something like Crystal Wave better suits them, then that's fine, it's your choice to do what you desire. I personally prefer this because most of the time only 1 armor spell isn't enough if you have more than 3 Ettins on you, the damage adds up faster than Aura of Restoration can heal. Plus Kinetic Armor has a long recharge time, and if you're only depending on that and it runs out but you still have to wait for the recharge, then you're screwed as you're standing waiting for a spell that has a 60 second recharge. If you're going to take 1 armor buff only, at least use Armor of Earth, it lasts longer than the recharge and even though it has less armor than Kinetic Armor, you aren't required to cast a spell to keep Armor of Earth up and it costs less energy. But it's your choice.

Desired Equipment

This build is pretty straight forward, and so is the equipment. Optimal equipment would be as follows:

-Any type of Max Armor Elementalist Armor (with runes of your choice, but I use Major/Superior Vigor with a Minor/Superior Energy Storage)
-Stone's Eye of Superior Earth Magic
-Galigord's Stone Staff

The type of armor which you use does not matter, because Ettins only use physical attacks and you don't really have any elements to defend from. So as long as it's max armor, even the Elementalist's collectors armor works. Use runes as desired, but as it says above, I prefer just using a Major/Superior Vigor and a Minor/Superior Energy Storage, usually Minor. Try to cut down on your Superior Runes here, the only one really needed is the Superior Earth Magic. Which that is next, you can get a Stone's Eye in Droknar's Forge for a price and crafting supplies, or you can get it from Ekimeel Trueshot in The Amnoon Oasis; Forgotten Seals are required for this trader, you need 5 of them for the Stone's Eye. The Superior Rune of Earth Magic will cost you like 600g at most, big deal.

Galigord's Stone Staff
Energy +10
Earth Dmg: 11-22
(Requires 9 Earth Magic)
Halves casting time of Earth Magic spells (Chance: 20%)
Halves skill recharge of Earth Magic spells (Chance: 20%)
Energy +5
Enchantments last 20% longer

Two-handed

This staff here works the best with the build in my opinion - it helps in lengthening the time in set enchantment spells like Elemental Attunement and Armor of Earth. This build is very enchantment heavy and the 20% enchantment mod works best, hands down. The extra energy is a plus, and since a majority of the skills in this build are Earth Magic, the 20/20 casting/recharge modifiers help greatly too. This staff can easily be acquired from players, for a relatively cheap price, you shouldn't be spending more than 6k or so on this staff, since Earth Magic is so sparsely used, the prices are much cheaper than other element counterparts like Rago's Flame Staff.

With this equipment you should be very well-suited to take on those Gypsie Ettins.

Strategy

This section I'm going to go into some detail about how to use the build, where to use it, how to get there, certain extensions and rules, anything I feel is necessary for you to use this build as successfully as possible.

Personally, I start this run from the Gates of Kryta cooperative mission. Most people tell me all the time "Run it from Beetletun, it's faster!" Well, I have a problem with that. Elementalists are kind of fragile as you know, and even with my enchantments this build doesn't get you from Beetletun to North Kryta Province very easily. The Caromi Tengu Wild are mesmers and will strip the enchantments you have while the Fierce/Brave smash you to bits, you won't make it to the next portal. The monsters are much weaker/easier (Mergoyles and Bog Skales) to kill going from the Gates of Kryta to North Kryta Province, and you can't get your enchants stripped easily going that way. Anyways, lets get started.

FROM THIS POINT ON, WHEN I REFER TO NUMBERS IN THIS STRATEGY, THEY MEAN YOU SHOULD CAST THAT SPELL ON YOUR SKILL BAR, IF YOU PUT THEM IN ORDER THEN THIS STRATEGY SHOULDN'T CAUSE CONFUSION. When I am talking about the number of monsters in a certain area, I will spell out the number.
Also, I'm going to personally note that this is a step by step run, if you already are familiar with the Gates of Kryta/North Kryta Province Area then I doubt you need to read this strategy section.

Here's the overview of the run from Gates of Kryta to North Kryta Province.

Not hard at all, you'll be fine.

First off, right out of the gates you'll just want to go the only way you can right now, straight through those cliffs. Keep 4, 6, 7, and 8 up. There is no point for 5 throughout this whole area, the monsters don't damage that much. Just kill the Mergoyles with Stone Daggers, or if you want to get up close and personal, use Whirlwind + Aftershock in succession. After clearing this little area you should end up here.

user posted image

This part opens up to the beach area of Gates of Kryta. Just stick to the cliff there and ignore those Mergoyles as I indicated in blue in the picture. Try to keep up 4 at almost all times. Once you're into a more open beach area with a wrecked ship there, kill the Bog Skales/Mergoyles in the open area there. You should be here now.

user posted image

Now you want to focus fire on where I circled in blue, those Mergoyles and Bog Skale Blighters there. Don't bother killing the other Mergoyles, they are a waste of time, and out of your way (they are up on a cliff). Don't put up any enchantments yet, instead try to weed out the Mergoyles from the Bog Skales or vice versa. The point of doing so is that you don't have to fight both of them at once, because the Bog Skales will use Chilblains which will strip some of your enchantments. Getting enchantments stripped plus being the focus of fire by two Bog Skales and six or eight Mergoyles isn't that great. Use Stone Daggers to keep your range and make sure your aggro circle doesn't cross over a Bog Skale/Mergoyle on the map. Once you've killed one group that was seperated, then kill the other group, which should only be two Bog Skales, or six to eight Mergoyles. It isn't too hard. You should now be here, just steps past the area you just passed.

user posted image

Just follow my lead here. Avoid the Bog Skale Blighters I circled in pink, kill the Mergoyles I circled in blue. Then follow the path the green arrow points to and you should be at the end of this area. There are four Mergoyles near the portal, it's your choice to fight them or not, you can just run past them with skill #4 on, you shouldn't have any problems, even without 4.

That is the end of Gates of Kryta to North Kryta Province. Now we're at the main event, North Kryta Province. This is where all the Ettins are, where it gets good.
Here is another overview of the run. I made extra loops in this picture because sometimes the spawn varies.

user posted image

Yes, I know the map is big, I could have cut it down. But the point of me doing so is because that whole map is the WHOLE area of North Kryta Province, and I want to show you the actual route out of the whole area which you're going to farm. Let's get started.

There is only one way to go from the start, once you are in a more open area, the path splits and you're standing in front of a ressurection point. You should be here.

user posted image

Of course as I said, the path splits, just follow the path of my green arrow, it should be the path to the right if you're playing in game right now. Kill anything in the way. You should come up to another path that one leads out to the beach, or up an incline to the west. Go northwest.

Now you should up on the cliff, which below is the beach, but there are no Ettins down on the beach. Head west now, just keep heading west, you should encounter some of your first Ettins. Time to fight. Before you aggro the Ettins, you should cast 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. If you're one that you're looking to make the best out of your build and really crunch time from your enchantments, then cast in this order: 6, 7, 8, 4, 5. Casting 4, 5 after 6, 7, 8 will give you back the energy from the 25 energy cost of casting both 4, and 5. Casting 5 last because it wears off relatively quick, so you should aggro the Ettins immediately after casting. Spam 1, and wait for the Ettin to hit it's Healing Signet for the first time, after he has healed, this is the only part that might take a little coordination. Hit 2 so you knock down the two or three Ettins that are attacking you, then IMMEDIATELY cast 3. This will cause the base damage, plus the additional damage that spell 3 offers to you, so you do extra damage, and interrupt anything the other Ettins were doing, since they are knocked down. It is best if you keep your two fingers on 2 and 3, so you can just hit them in succession, or just make sure you click 3 right after 2, even while you're in the midst of casting 2. Once the first Ettin falls, just repeat this process until they are all dead. Make sure you keep spamming 1 to keep 5 up, and make sure you don't forget about 4, it will wear off every Ettin or two. After you have killed the first Ettins here, just keep heading west. There will be a path that goes down to the beach, or you can keep following the path you are going on, and start heading south along the path. You should be here.

user posted image

As I said before, just follow the dirt path south here. When running down this area, keep CTRL held down most of the time, so you can see what monsters are in the area, for what to avoid and a possible Ettin spawn you might want to snag.

An important note I will put here, when fighting Bog Skales, do not use 5. They have a hex spell called Soul Barbs, and every time an Enchantment or Hex spell is cast on you, you will take a certain amount of damage, usually 26 or so. With 5 on, ANY time you cast a spell, this enchantment is automatically renewed, which is the equivalent of casting a new enchantment, so Soul Barbs will take effect and you will be damaged every time you do so. If you are already enchanted with 5 and have Bog Skales aggroed, just wait until 5 wears off and then you can proceed to kill the Skales. Depending on the spawn, you will be at a split path now at the end of the south path, or at another split path sort of west from there, either way, go west. You should be here, or farther west up the path if the Ettin spawn varied like I have on the picture of the overview of North Kryta Province.

user posted image

Head west as I show on the map here. You should encounter some Bog Skales maybe, or maybe nothing at all. There should be a little opening with a path that heads down the beach, it rarely possesses Ettins and if it does, they will spawn near the mouth of this path; this path is marked in red in the next picture. The other path here should wind around and go south, but don't follow that path; this path is marked pink the next picture. Head northwest, you will see the last part where any Ettins will show up on this run now; this is the split paths in green, it doesn't matter which one you take because it's just a little cliff that goes back down to the other split part. Just scan the little area here for Ettins, there should be anywhere from two to six Ettins. Here is the picture explaining the paths, just head in the direction of the green arrows, make sure you're holding down CTRL to see any possible monsters so you don't miss any Ettins.

user posted image

Just clear the Ettins out of this area, and that should be it. You should now end up at the gate to the Ascalon Settlement, and you just follow the path to the portal that goes Nebo Terrace. Just generally head northwest up the path, and when the path will start to fork again, just take the more northern path, you should see the portal.

That should be it, hopefully you finished your run with not too many problems. When you zone at Nebo Terrace, just turn around and go back into North Kryta Province, now you can go the same path you just went in reverse and go back to Scoundrel's Rise. You can repeat this run as many times as you want, just keep going back and forth between Nebo Terrace and Scoundrel's Rise. The Ettins are there again once you rezone, so you now can farm it all over again.

Enjoy, good luck farming.
If you have any questions about this, you can message me in game @ Nemisis Valor, if I have time or if I'm available I should be able to help. And feel free to make suggestions, I'm open for them.

Yeah, this guid works very well. The same build also works for the beginning of the Elona Reach mission, with the exception that I use Earthquake instead of Whirlwind there. As for replaceing Armor of Earth with crystal wave, I must admit it isn't that great. You really don't need to have AoE, but it can help in emergencies and Crystal Wave isn't very effective.

I find Earthquake ineffective because of the long recharge, I can just keep unloading Whirlwind + Aftershocks because Whirlwind has an 8 second recharge and Aftershock has a 10 second recharge. You could do 2 Whirlwind + Aftershock in the time it takes you to wait after your first time casting Earthquake + Aftershock, the recharge of 15 seconds is meh, plus the long casting time of the spell itself, it's better if I can shoot off a Ww + As combo before the Ettin can finish it's healing sig.

I was talking about Elona's Reach. Earthquake is better because Minotaurs can really pump out damage. I also like Earthquake because it ALWAYS knocks down foes. Whirlwind misses if they use healing sig...

Very nice build. TheSmile.gif

I haven't tried farming Ettins before, what are the drops like on average? It sounds like quite an effective build, but the cost and effort of preparing the build is only going to pay off if you stick with it, so the drop rates are important too.

Ettins will drop a pice of armor with a rune in it just about once every three drops. Most of your money will be made from selling the armor with the runes still on them, alone with the hides and gold. Occaisionally, you'll get a major vigor (usualy purple, but I've had one gold). That's pretty much the only thing worth salvaging short of a superior. If you get lucky, you'll get a nice superior rune, but I have yet to get one (I'm not the least bit lucky sad.gif). Moo got a superior absorbtion, though. It's really easy to farm here, and the rewards are great.

Well actually I heard about ettin farming off Ari long, long ago. bluetongue.gif

Thanks for the tips though, when I get some time and get all the stat points for my E/Me, I'll certainly give it a shot.

I farmed Ettins? Hehe, I would just use a modified griffon build for them. But I never liked Kryta. Earliest things I ever farmed was... UW on the nerfed Solo Monk build. I hit up the Hydra and the Griffon's when we didn't have favor though. My farming days are over! I hate farming now. bluetongue.gif
