Well, first of all, the best way not to get hacked is to not give your password to anyone, even your friends (I once new someone who gave his password to his best friend who then got onto his account, traded the stuff to his account and sold it all). Also its best not to have generic or obvious passwords.
If you want to keep your computer safe then you need to have an anti-virus program like McAffe or Norton. When you have these programs you also have to remember to update them regularly.
For even more protection I would also suggest using Ad-Aware and Sby Bot Search and Destroy. You have to keep these programs updated also. It's best to have both of these programs because they will find something the other does not.
Run regular scans of your computer to make sure you do not have any trojans, viruses, or key loggers, ect....
To reduce your chances of getting viruses and other malicious programs on your computer you should not download stuff from the internet, and if you do make sure you scan the thing that you downloaded before you open it.

I was using Norton as an example... Norton and McAffe are generally the most common and well known, so they're probably the best to use as examples so that people know what i'm talking about...
