I am 100% sure there are aliens. They come over from mexico every day and take away our jobs.

Seeing how there are 200 billion stars in our galaxy, and more galaxies than stars in the Milky Way...

I'd say yes. bluetongue.gif

As for aliens in our galaxy... I'd say 'yes' as well. Intelligent? Spacefaring? Dunno, but I would also guess 'yes' for somewhere in the galaxy if it is physically possible for interstellar travel to exist. Nearby? I'd say 'no'. Before someone calls me crazy though, keep in mind that the sky we see at night is such a stupidly small piece of our galaxy, and the entire galaxy should be considered. If you think you have a feel for how big the galaxy is, you don't. Even astronomers will agree to that. bluetongue.gif

******************************************

To have a little fun with the question though, here is Drake's Equation:

N = No * fp * ne * fl * fi * fc * L

N = Number of intelligent, communicating civilizations in the galaxy at this moment

No = The rate of star formation in the galaxy (not the total number of stars)

fp = The fraction of those stars that have planets

ne = The number of planets per star that are capable of sustaining life

fl = The fraction of ne in which life actually emerges

fi = The fraction of fl where intelligent life emerges

fc = The fraction of fi that communicate

L = The fraction of a planet's life during which a communicating civilization can survive

The odds of life only existing on Earth is so slim, that most would consider it impossible for Aliens not to exist. We have so many questions about the universe and everything... these questions, however, will not be answered in our lifetime. All we can do is speculate.

I'll give my idea for the equation...

No = 16 stars per year

fp = Theoretically planets of some sort are required for star formation with the exception of systems with multiple stars. It has to do with conservation of momentum, and a companion-less star could fall apart before fusion begins. It isn't really known what percentage of stars are in binary systems, but I'll assume 50%. To account for that and anomalies, I will assume that fp is .4.

ne = For life as we know it, in our solar system, Venus, Earth, Mars, Europa, and Titan appear capable of sustaining carbon-based life of some sort. I'll be pessimistic, though, and give ne a value of 2 because I doubt the majority of systems have as many planets as ours.

fl = In our case, .2 would be the value. That's only taking into account a system we know has life, however, so I will lower this somewhat. Let's say... .07

fi = This is a tough guess. Our planet has been through a ton of a beating, and life still managed to thrive for the majority of our planet's existence. Of everything alive now, there are multiple "intelligent" lifeforms. Us, obviously (with the exception of a few I know), but also dolphins, some primates other than us, whales, and some other things... As well as many animals capable of complex thinking, but not quite intelligence... and almost all mammals and birds, as well as many insects and other lifeforms, have patterns of communication. Seeing all of this here, and how it has endured so much, I'll be optimistic. I'll give this .7

fc = On our planet, thoughout its existence, we are the first and only ones to develop ways to communicate beyond our planet. I would just have to assume that this is rare. I'll give it .05

L = I would assume 400 years. Either a civilization will destroy itself because it isn't ready to handle the technology, or it will develop technology to communicate by a means we cannot detect. By "communication" we are talking about signals like that which we can detect.

So....

N = 16 * .4 * 2 * .07 * .7 * .05 * 400 = 12.5 Communicating Civilizations

That's higher than what I got last time I did this, hehe. There's no right or wrong answer, it's all an estimate.

Seeing the size of the galaxy though, even with that number, it doesn't surprise me that we haven't located another civilization (but I do think it is a very good thing to search). I also don't think we've been visited, but that's just me. I think something else is more likely, if it's not immediately us or some other normal phenomena (like weather or solar), but it would be a different topic from this.
