Summary for the lazy: Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), the group responsible for Alvin, is working on a new "hybrid" remotely-operated vehicle, or HROV for short, that can operate not only while tethered to a research vessel, but also while swimming freely. They decided to hold a contest for middle school, high school, and college groups to name the HROV. This was in April. The results were announced in June.
Our team kinda... won.
Contest prizes? Our name (Nerius) gets used and we become all historical and stuff. Yay!
Also, in September, we get an all-expenses-paid (except for food

"Yay!" would apply if Monterey High School chose to define "the winning team" as "the 2005-2006 MHS ROV team" rather than "the 2006-2007 MHS ROV team."
Guess what? I'm not on the 2006-2007 team. I'm on the team that actually, you know, sent the damn name in, which means I don't get to go even though this year's Freshmen do. Hooray! Fortunately not all is lost; after a makeshift Spanish Inquisition, we ("we" being myself and others similarly screwed) were given permission to attend the actual events of the trip provided we could cover our own airfare and lodging... which we can't.
F.A.H. <_<
So I thought I'd rant about it. Still cool that our name was picked though, hehe

(For those who read the "Cspace~!" thread, yes, this is why MHS is on notice. Really, with all of their other screwups over the last 4 years, they really should be dead to me... but I'm too damn forgiving.)
(I'm phoning WHOI tomorrow to see what their definition of "the winning team" is; wish me luck)
