Anti-Warrior Mesmer Build

By JGJTan (Farneka Laisara)

So like, here's another attempt at a build. Now we all love to annoy opposition when it comes to any kind of PvP battle so I thought I'd share my little build I use in Fort Aspenwood. This build can also be altered slightly to suit for other PvP games by adding in the Resurrection Signet or whatever other means of ressurection which tickles your fancy.

I'm sorry other peeps who might not have Factions and Prophecies since this build uses elements of both games. But for those who happen to have access to both and have a Mesmer, have a go with this build at Fort Aspenwood and enjoy watching all those physical fighters crumble under your squishy might. I bet you could even Tease them but that would be just plain mean... and it would involve you to have Nightfall as well. So no, we'll just stick to this one.

It took me a little bit to perfect this build but after several tries I enjoy being the bane to Warriors, Rangers and Assassins. You can really annoy all professions with this build however it might take a little longer. This build is perfect for applying pressure and to divert the opposition's attention to try to stay alive and/or disable and take you out. But you should be able to survive if you play it well. Just don't fight large mobs otherwise you'll die. Take on one to ensure 100% success and taking on two requires experience with the build but you should be able to manage.

How should I dress for this special occasion?

Well looking at the build, as well as my choice of attire for the occasion, it seems that a decent armour class would have to be the Rogue's Attire. I mean, it's not like I have anything for that armour... it's just what seems best. Honest! +10 armour against physical damage is the best option as your main opponents will be those who dish out the painful anti-squishy damage. So with 70 armour against physical damage, you'll look all set.

So let's see what you can defend with offensively. I guess you could try swear at them, but that would just be plain offensive and rude. So let's stick with nice old weapons. For me, I prefer a decent wand and focus item however you might prefer the staff. If you were to pick the wand and focus item, I myself choose Vokur's Cane and The Rockmolder. It's nice to have an extra boost in recharge, casting and level for Illusion Magic and you could always find collectors who have replicas of these items. With a staff, your best bet would probably be Vokur's Staff. Again, if you don't like green, get a replica.

Now in terms of runes, let's check 'em out. First of all, you'll need the ever-so-trusty Costume Mask for a +1 to Illusion Magic. Then you'll require a Rune of Superior Illusion Magic, Minor Fast Casting and Minor Inspiration Magic. Oh, as well as either Minor, Major or Superior Vigor to counter the nasty effect of -75hp from the Illusion Magic Rune. Everything seems set now so let's move onto the next task at hand.

I don't need any points, do I?

Of course, what would a build be without attribute points? Well... it could be one of my No Attributes builds however we're not discussing them today.

Fast Casting: 9 (8+1)
Illusion Magic: 16 (12+1+3)
Inspiration Magic: 11 (10+1)

This'll leave you with 5 attribute points to spare, which just so happens to be my favourite number. How convenient. I'll leave you to find some sort of use for them since it's always good to modify builds to your liking.

So I've got my attire and I've got brownie points, can I join the crowd now?

First you need to know how to use your skills before you can accept your invitation. So go back to your lessons and study these skills because you'll need to use them well. Although these ones are pretty straightforward so you shouldn't find it too hard.

Conjure Phantasm: So of course, if this build revolves around degeneration, it'll utilize the basic Mesmer Illusion Magic spell: Conjure Phantasm. For 10 energy, you'll give 'em a run for their money by giving them a health denegeration of 5 for at least 15 seconds. Not bad really. This can also be used as a cover hex with it's relatively quick casting time and short recharge time of 5 seconds.

Ineptitude (Elite): And here's one of your most important skills. For 10 seconds, the next time they attack... BAM. They're blinded for 10 seconds and take at least 142 damage. Not too bad I have to admit. They either be wary and don't attack for 10 seconds, or attack and be blinded for 10 seconds with a 90% chance to miss. Although the recharge is 20 seconds however if you play your cards right, they'll be more worried with keeping their heart alive leaving you to club 'em to death and spade them an early grave.

Ether Feast: Bring along this standard healer to help brush off any dirt your opponent might hit you with. Hoping they have at least 3 points of energy stored, you can heal yourself for 39hp per point they lose gaining up to 147hp every 8 seconds when the spell recharges. Although the casting time might not be pleasing, the levels in Fast Casting should be good enough to avoid sudden interruption.

Images of Remorse: Again, this seems to be the secondary degeneration hex on the Mesmer's plate to choose from. For 10 seconds, scare them with a health degeneration of 3. And it's even better against physical fighters as this'll dish out 55 damage if they're attacking. It also makes a great cover hex and spam hex as it costs 5 energy with a 5 second recharge, although the casting time is 2 seconds so don't use this like Wastrel's Worry!

Phantom Pain: This is the last spell to finish off your hex-degen combo. For 10 seconds, give 'em hell with health degen of 3 and to at a cherry to the cake, they'll aquire a deep wound which'll be more than a flesh wound for 21 seconds. Use this hex wisely as it has a recharge of 15 seconds and a casting time of 2 seconds.

Spirit of Failure: Combined with a hopefully successful blind from Ineptitude, you'll gain 4 energy each time they miss when trying to attack as they'll have an extra 25% chance to miss under the influence of this hex. Use this hex to your full advantage to gain energy as you'll need as much as you can get, however beware of interruption as this takes 3 seconds to cast.

Energy Tap: A basic energy management skill, this'll help you if you get into a difficult situation. However, just make sure the person you target actually has energy. So for 5 energy, they'll lose 6 energy and you'll gain 2 for each point of energy they lost. So basically, you can get up to 12 energy from them after using 5 energy to cast it. Use it to get back up on your feet, but beware of the long casting of 3 seconds and the long recharge of 25 seconds!

Drain Enchantment: To finish off, we have this spell. This is good to use as a way of gaining energy, but it's also a method to remove any health regeneration spells they might use to counter your health degeneration such as Healing Breeze or Mending. By using up 10 points of energy, you'll remove one enchantment from your target and you'll gain 17 points of energy. Pretty helpful, although the recharge is 30 seconds long.

I'm itching to join in. Where's the function being held?

With this build, it's an ideal one to take into Fort Aspenwood. It can be used against all professions and is a great annoyance build. It'll divert their attention and make them wary of you so make full use of the advantage!

It can also be adapted for other PvP matches. Just replace Energy Tap with Ressurection signet and you should be all set!

Let's get the party started! What're you waiting for?

Hold up, first you need to learn when you use each skill and how to combat each profession. These skills are pretty much straightforward however you have to be careful and make sure you know when and how to use them.

In order of skill use, make sure you always cast Conjure Phantasm first. They might have some skill such as Hex Breaker to counter the first hex you use, and you don't want to waste using something such as Ineptitude or Phantom Pain on someone with Hex Breaker. If they do have Hex Breaker, make sure you cast Images of Remorse after that if they decide to use Hex Breaker again. If not, wait 'til they start attacking you and then activate Ineptitude and Spirit of Failure. Right after that, hit 'em with Phantom Pain and then Images of Remorse again. This should make them blinded, give you +4 energy each time they miss, and give them -10 health degeneration for 10 seconds.

Now if they happen to use a health regeneration skill such as Healing Breeze, they'll still have a health degeneration of about -3 to -1 due to all the hexes in combination giving -11 but the cap is -10. Remove it using Drain Enchantment and then follow it up by renewing all your hexes once they recharge. If they use another health renegeration enchantment such as Mending or Watchful Healing, make sure you can see they don't have another regen skill such as Healing Breeze before you remove it. However if they do have Breeze, wait for them to cast it and then remove it.

For physical fighters such as a Warriors, Assassins or Rangers, use the guide above when activating your skills. Just beware of anything like knockdown or interruption from them, such as the use of Shock Assassins or Shock Warriors as they'll come close to you, or shadow step to you, and then knock you down and interrupt your action. So just before they hit, activate Ineptitude to minimize the chance of interruption and to make them not have enough time to realize they've been hexed with it. With Rangers, just make sure you can identify when they activate an interruption skill such as Distracting Shot or Savage Shot. Otherwise, hex away!

With spellcasters such as Necromancers, Mesmers, Elementalists, Ritualists and Monks, first hit them with your health degeneration hexes in this order: Conjure Phantasm, Images of Remorse, Phantom Pain. Once they start casting spells to either attack you or heal themselves or others, use Ether Feast as much as possible to annoy them by stealing little bits of energy. When you're down on a little bit of energy, use Energy Tap to annoy their spellcasting and energy supplies. If they decide to counter your energy degeneration or use an enchantment which will help their offensive spells, use Drain Enchantment. Also if they start attacking you with their weapons, use Ineptitude and Spirit of Failure to give them sudden spike damage coupled with the health degeneration to make them panic. Activate all your skills again when necessary.

This build is mainly aimed towards hinderance and shutting down melee fighters. It has the ability to kill of each profession and it can be a fun build to play around with. So to whoever might test this build out and/or use it, good luck with that.

^^ Thanks Ayumi, you rock!! ^^

Looks good. I'm going to use this build on my Mesmer until I can get my other build going. I'm not a big fan of Energy Tap, though. The cast and recharge times are way too much.

Yeah I ain't either although it's only a backup energy management spell since most people you hex use an enchantment to try counter the degen. icon_sweatdrop.gif

And when you do some other sort of form of PvP which requires a Resurrection Signet, replace Energy Tap with it. bluetongue.gif

Then again, a good one I sometimes might switch to is to replace Energy Tap with Ether Lord and to put your Fast Casting down to 7 (6+1) and Inspiration Magic up to 12 (11+1). Ether Lord's one of my favourite Inspiration Magic skills however you've got to use this skill when you have just recovered 5 energy as you'll lose all energy when you cast this however you'll get +3 energy regeneration while they get -3 energy degeneration for 9 seconds. It takes 2 seconds to cast and 20 seconds to recharge but it's a brilliant spell if you want to shut down a Monk or other spellcaster. TheSmile.gif

Yeah, Fort Aspenwood is actually pretty fun. I spent a lot of time playing it with my Ritualist.
