The pain all depends on where you get hit. I'd wear a cup if I were you, and if you don't, the last thing you want to do is brag about not wearing one. It gives others an idea where to aim. bluetongue.gif

Joy! I'm your fox. I can answer all your questions and then some.

1) Why do I play it? It might be the rush from speedball, or the tension in woodsball, or the delight in playing 'army' only real life. It's definately not for the pain, that's for sure. It's definately one high octane game. A rush that you can't get from any other sport in the world.

2) Hrm... Well. I only know of one paintballer from the Brigade that lives in Australia. He goes by the handle "Aussie Bloke." He shot a FPS video a while ago and posted it on Tyger's website. I could ask him where he lives, if you'd like?

Edit: Aussie Bloke lives in Brisbane Australia...dunno if that helps any.

3) That really depends on what kind of gun you want. And what style you play, and what type of game you play.

Paintball is split into three types of games.

Speedball.
Woodsball.
Scenarioball.

Speedball is the kind you see on TV, the one where everyone runs around on Astroturf in bright jersies, slinging $20 worth of paint just to get one guy out. The fields are small and built like rectangles or ovals and are generally composed of a back, mid, center, and then the other mid and back respectively from one end of the field to the other. All of the bunkers on this field are inflatable or they are metalic and wooden bunkers. The object of the game is to get everyone out.

Woodsball is the kind that 93% of all paintballer's play. It's out in the woods and involves more tactics than speedball. Camoflauge, grenades, and other neat things come into play here. Here, winning doesn't mean you have a high end gun that can shoot 20 balls per second. The fields are often acres of woodland or prairie and can also include man-made bunkers as well as trees and forts for protection. All sorts of special weapons are allowed here. Greandes. Rocket launchers. Even tanks. Game play is either Capture the flag, Elimination, or Assassination.

Scenarioball is woodsball, only with a twist. You're usually re-enacting some sort of battle, like Oklahoma D-Day with the invasion of Germany or something. You play on woodsball fields, but winning isn't taking down all of the opponents, as they are all re-inserted each 15 minutes. Instead, you can win by gaining points by achieving goals, finding hidden 'loot' around the field, interrogating specific people, and completing missions such as "Hold the central fort for twenty minutes with atleast 10 operating men."

I play all of them, and I also play the way very few do. I play stock class. That means I have to pump my gun between shots, and my paintballs aren't fed directly into the gun itself. They're in little horizontal tubes that hold 10 shots at a time. I shoot 1BPS in all my games, and I enjoy it.

The average kit for a newcomer can range from $50 to $150. If you want, I can list of certain things that I would buy if I were you, but for your first game, you should find a field and get a rental gun. Mention that you're a first timer, and they'll help you with the basics. I can also offer many helpful tips if you're interested.

4) I get this a lot...and you're right to be curious. Honestly? The first shot hurts the most. The first shot of every day ALWAYS hurts the most. Why? I'll explain.

The first shot you ever take:
Hurts the most because you're expecting it. You're walking around the field with your mind screaming "OMG! OMG! OMG! I'm gonna get hit! OWCH!" but that's normal. After your first, it won't hurt as bad.

The first shot of the day:
These even hurt veterans who are 40 years of age and plus, simply because if it's been a while since you've played, you aren't used to the pain. But after you get your wake up call on the first hit, the rest will seem like childs play.

Honestly, they hurt about as much as getting a shot, or getting bit by a mosquito. Even less sometimes. Sometimes it's just like a flick.

How much a paintball hurts depends on the velocity that it's traveling when it leaves the barrel. All fields require all guns to shoot under 300 feet per second. At speedball fields, since the encounters are closer by 20-50 feet, they usually drop it to 250 FPS. Shots won't leave welts (bruises) if they're going less than 300 FPS. However, sometimes, the air can sort of 'spike' it past 300, so just because you get a welt or two doesn't mean that the other person was cheating by making his gun go faster, it just spiked a little.

You can also wear padding, if you like. I wear knee pads and for speedball, elbow pads too. I just have bad joints, and I usually dress in layers. Also, it's highly recommended that you get a cup. Laugh if you must, but the day that I bought my nutcup, I took a shot there. I'm happy to announce that I hardly even felt it, but it scared the bajeezus out of me.

Bounces can sometimes hurt more than breaks, which is quite silly, but true. But despite that, you can't help but say "OWCH!...YAY!" because if it doesn't break, you're still in.

I've been playing for a few years now, but even still I sometimes cuss when shot. =P It depends on the proximity. I've taken point blank shots, they're not too fun, and sometimes, illegal. Like I said, if you're interested, I can elaborate sooo much more.

And yes, the paint washes out. The shell of a paintball is made from sugar and wheat, tasty. The inside is made out of pepto bysmal and melted crayons...I highly recommend that you do not suck on them, but they are non-toxic and biodegradable. You'll eventually take a shot to the mask with your mouth open, and you'll taste it. But it's preferred if you don't taste it before then.

Lemme know if you have any more questions.

That's a good thing to mention, Slain.

Some places in woodsball/scenarioball have a rule about "Wounders." If there aren't medics during a scenario game, then they'll have this rule. If you're hit below the elbows or below the knees, you call "WOUNDER" and everyone is supposed to stop firing at you until you get your bearings straight. Three wounds = one out. Head shots, even in medic games, mean you're out. Exotic weapon eliminations also mean you're out. As in, you can't get hit from a grenade and say "Medic." No...you're out.

Ahh...I still recommend that you go to a field and rent first...but...I'll try to help where I can.

Before you pick a gun, you need to decide what type of a person you are.

Are you patient? Willing? Cooperative? Humble? Perhaps you want a pump. I love playing pump because it means -a lot- when you get someone out. Let's face it. When you hit someone in the goggles. It feels good. But when you hit someone in the goggles with your $80 marker that only has 7 shots left in it...that's saying something.

Maybe you're aggressive? Bold? Risky? "in your face' action? Maybe you want to rock with a short barrel and full auto...I dunno. I think you have to decide your own assets for yourself. Finding the right 'first time' marker is really hard. Believe me. My first gun wasn't the one for me. It was a semi, and I'm selling it this Spring.

I highly recommend that you get a job of some kind before investing in Paintball too far...that's how I've afforded all of my things. And if you thought about a girlfriend--DON'T! You'll be glad you did. =P Unless ofcourse, it's a girlfriend who plays paintball. In that case, gimme her number!

A basic kit for speedball is roughly-
A mask
A gun
A tank
A hopper
Paint
Air
And a willingness to have fun.

A basic kit for woodsball is sometimes a bit more, depending on how hardcore you want to get-
A mask
A gun
A tank
A hopper
Paint
Air
Camo (if you want)
Pod-pack

But you might want a pod-pack for either one. Both games can get pretty long, and while 200 paintballs inside of your hopper sounds like it's more than enough, it isn't when you're playing semi-auto. Especially your first time. When I'm playing pump, I carry 100 rounds in 10 round tubes on a shotgun shell belt as well as 10 more in my gun. A majority of my friends and teammates carry around pods of 100-300 rounds during a match. A little extra weight isn't so bad when you know that you can outlast your opponent in a fire-fight.

Last but not least...I have to ask that you watch some movies. A LOT OF THEM.

Firstly, go here and watch the first two. NOTHING...MORE.

http://www.specialop...ctics/index.asp

Ah, piece of cake, right? Now you know the basic principles of 'what to do' during a basic encounter, mono-e-mono. As well as the things you -shouldn't- do as a newbie. Good. Now it's time to really put on your thinking caps.

Go to the following address and watch Tyger's FIRST SEASON of Tip-clips. These will help. A -lot-. Watch the first one to the 38th one. You can skip the music videos if you want like numbers 7 and 19. All of these are -really- important skills to learn. As well as some common knowledge. Tyger is a really experienced middle-aged guy that I respect. He's taken time out of his day to make these videos because he -loves- paintball as much as I do. He covers certain aspects of speedball -and- woodsball. You'll know which is which by the movie he's doing.

http://webdog.specia.../video/tipclip/

Let me know when you're done watching all of the FIRST SEASON.

What you want is a monster paintball gun that shoots 50 rounds per second has 2 barrels and about 1000 paintballs bluetongue.gif

Also, getting shot in the back of the head hurts... bad. Invest in a mask with a back to it... and antifogging lenses

None of those are necessary. I always wear du-rags or stocking caps (depending on the temp) when I play, so head shots don't hurt quite as much for me. Anti-fogging lenses are really just if you're a heavy breather, I've never fogged my lenses before, and that can be solved if you get a thermal lense anyway.

There's only one gun with two barrels, and that'll set you back $800. No. None of it is necessary. The people who own the Nasty Typhoon really just own it to say that they own it...I don't think they blaze 20BPS with it or anything.

Yikes. We get temperatures higher than that, but never humidity quite that high. Well..I shouldn't say that. But I've never played in humidity that high. At 30%-50%, you'll be fine.

I strongly recommend to anyone who's curious about paintball that they should watch the movies I've mentioned. They can help a lot.
