Abilities System... Which is the best

This probably isn't an original topic, but I'm new and so wouldn't have a clue either way.
Which Squaresoft RPG (FF, chrono trigger/cross, SOM, etc.) do you all believe had the best magic and abilities system and why? What parts were good and bad about each approach.
Some of my favourites include the materia system of FFVII, the job system of III and V, the customizability of characters in VIII, the sheer amount of completely different and optional characters in VI and one or two other ideas.
Discuss.

I agree with you about the materia system, that was awesome, but I like the FF9 ability system because of the dual moves some characters had, as well as the unique abilities to every character...
Have a nice cool Samuel Jackson, it'll make ya drunk!! MMM....MMMM Bich

ff 7 had the bast magic system, 8 had the worst though i mean come on sucking it out of monsters and the floor and when you run out you cant just recharge, you have to go and find it again. oh and ff 10 was the best for summons i love being able to strengthen my aeons although they cant get any stronger now because they all hit 99,999 damage every time just like my characters.

Yeah, I think we'd all agree magic in FF8 was pointless, beyond running out it also weakened your attributes by using magic if it was junctioned. I haven't seen FFX, although from what you're saying it sounds like they stuffed it all up by overpowering everything. I could be wrong though, haven't played it.
I had left out FFIX, it was good, but not great. Not very original in my opinion. One that I've recently been very impressed with is Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. It's the ability system from FFIX, the job system from FFV, an advance wars-esque battle system and a lot of playing to be done in it. The best bit of the abilities system in FFTA is that the huge amount of classes, weapons and more than anything else, abilities.

In my opinion, ff7's materia was by far the best. Oh, if you wanna raise kotr, go to the north cave and take the left path. (I think it's the left one.) Keep going and you will encounter magic pots and orange balls. Give the pots elixers and kill them. They give you 1000ap each. Then kill some of those balls, they give you 800gp each and come in groups of three. Good luck, I've got 3 mastered that way.

I was gonna comment on that when I looked up this topic. . . but you beat me to it.

Took your time posting OM...
Yup, FFTA was quite a good compromise between a few other games. Materia was a fresh idea and I'm glad they tried something new, but somehow it didn't quite seem to work for me. A lot of FF7 just seemed... subtly wrong for some reason.
