So, have we moved on to Rylkan's question, or does Zoo ask another one?

*pokes Rylkan* Gotta answer the question first! bluetongue.gif

But anyway, the speed of light, 186,000 miles/second

The group velocity of a wave has to be less than or equal to the speed of electromagnetic waves in vacuum, but the transverse waves inside the group velocity wave, can be well above the speed of light.

That's why I'm a biologist and not a physicist bluetongue.gif.

NEW QUESTION!

If I was holding some string with a lead mass tied to the bottom (hanging, not touching the ground), what is the reaction force of gravity acting on the lead box?

hmm... the amount of force gravity pulls the box with minus the amount of force from the tension of the string holding it up

Nono, that's the net force acting on the lead mass. bluetongue.gif

I'm talking about 'reaction pairs', as in, 'every action has an equal and opposite reaction'.

Bleh. I made it through two semesters of physics (somehow), but it obviously didn't stick very well.

hmm... the string pulling up

That's wrong, I'm afraid. This was a question on our physics test though, so I'm not going to answer. bluetongue.gif

Aye, it's quite a weighty concept once you understand it.

Hmm, let's see. It's been a while since I've been in physics, but I don't recall ever learning about gravity having a reactionary force. Although, this contradicts newtons.... erm, 2nd law? 3rd, maybe? Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. I just thought it was a property of matter that masses were pulled towards each other. Oh, could it be that the lead weight is pulling the earth towards itself?

Yay! Alright, how's another physics question sound?
