Yeah, good old days....

I remember those.. but then... it happened..

It was a sunny and green day in runescape (DARN YOU LIMITED WEATHER PATTERNS!!!!) and I was mining. Some guy told me he knew a trick to teleport into a special area where you can mine any ore. I was like "Coolness!" He led me up to the wildy, where I saw his combat level: 10. I said "Whatever, your probably lying. This is the wilderness.. I know what I'm doign here." He said "Oh yeah? Bet you can't beat me!" So, I took him up. he was wearing full black.. stuff I never touched... And I attacked him... and sudenly 6 rangers came out and arched me, I hit a 5 and died.

And lost my mithril.

SO I stopped playing for 8 months.

WHen I returned, in January, I searched for somewhere where I could help people.. save them from my cruel fate.. make them stronger. I joine dup with SeeD... and I've been happy since!

But yeah.. every month we shall have "Help a Newbie" day!

I mean.. not everyone does that.. most of us are working to becom stronger.. SO on like the 3rd of every month we should get together and go about on one server... helping newbies together!

My opinion:

When RS started, and even to the point when I started (few months before world 5 debuted), most people were newbies. Rune was hard to get, and those with it were considered Über. Holiday drops hadn't started yet, and weren't popular when they did (indeed, I didn't know about them until a month or so after the Easter Eggs... could have had a huge collection of pumpkins, crackers, p-hats, and easter eggs had I played those days..).

People were a varied range of levels, but mostly low. RS wasn't advertised anywhere, and was found mostly by fantasy fans that wanted a free MMORPG. Most were 18+, or mature teens (myself included in this group), and were respectful of others. We knew that everyone starts as a newb, graduates to "newbie," and finally has decent enough stats to no longer be called "new." Additionally, due to the small number of servers (4) and the lack of P2P, Andrew & Co were in-game a lot more. Rules were enforced more. People behaved because they knew the consequences if they didn't.

Now, RS is popular. Lots of players means more players per staff member. People don't fear the rules, though about 0.0000000000001% fear SeeD (being against scammers and all). Because there is no law, there is no reason to follow it. Ever read Lord of the Flies? The same thing is happening in RuneScape.

Why doesn't it happen in other popular games, like EverQuest? Simple. They are able to pay enough full-time GMs (Game Masters) and recruit enough trustworthy (after all, these people are paying $15 per month to play, and nearly all are mature 18+) "Guides" (volunteer GMs that don't get paid and haveless power, but are still authority) to keep order. Rulebreakers are dealt with easily and quickly, and 99% of the time fairly as well.

Granted, this mostly happens on F2P. However, I have heard of it happening on P2P a lot recently. P2P gets what they pay for - customer service. I may be F2P, but I think it's fair. On the other hand, everyone starts as a F2P... if it's filled with scammers, potential members quit. JAGeX has a problem on their hands - they need to hire people JUST as mods. They have enough staff for their updates and other Customer Service, so why not improve in-game staff by hiring new people just to mod? It would work...

I'm tired.
Those who will remember, will speak fondly of the warm morning breeze.

Nice little speech bluetongue.gif I saw that you changed your avatar to a badger too TheSmile.gif *Excellent, everything is falling into place...*.

I find that f2p is the scammist scam ever. On p2p we don't get (much) "plz can i hav full rune ill b ur friend 4eva" because the members must like runescape and hate scammers, since most people wouldn't pay $5 a month if they didn't like the game. Now enough advertising members. I thought SeeD was a clan that helps n00bs anyway if I'm right. Note that the n00b day should be once a year, not once a month, as it's bad enough for me having to wake up at 5am to be at a clan meeting :S

Obviously bluetongue.gif

I really liked the idea of a Help The N00bs Day. It would really show that we are a clan that says no to scammers, and wants peace and happiness throghout Runescape.

Once a month (Or once every 2, I dunno bluetongue.gif) we could all log on at a given time and parade to Lumbridge or Varrock, with liberal amounts of gp, and probably small weapons/armor to give away to the little people of Runescape. TheSmile.gif

I really think this could work, so let's see if we can make it happen bluetongue.gif

im kinda doubtful about that idea.... most people now have low lvl characters right? o lets say, a lvl 70 made a lvl 3. we give somethin to the lvl 3, and guess what? the guy jus sells the stuff and drop trades the money to his main. whats the point in that? and then theres the beggars. i never give stuff to beggars. 1, because they're not even trying to play the game. 2 because beggars never prosper. 3 because they'll probably lose it or sell it. after that, we now have the people who trick newbs. we give something to a newb. someguy tries to buy the thing for 5k when it could cost 10k. the newb just got ripped off. i would like this idea to happen, its just that i dont give out trust that fast. i dont wanna be one of those guys who get stepped over on, for the deeds that i do. but if your up to it, i'd rather just have a drop party. even though some high lvls might interfere.

And while where on the subject, when whas the stats level of noob pushed up? it used to be around 29-35 was totaly past noob hood. now, its around 65 to 70. anyone who insults noobs will call a level 55 a noob. we all know how long level 55 takes. and by the time you are level 55 you DON'T use the jagex map anymore, you dont try to sell bones and you found out a long time ago that begging is stupid.
I don't give to people who beg, howerver, i will randomly bless a level 15 with a full kit of steel just because i know how what it was like to be level 15. the thing that makes me be iritated at noobs is when some level four camps out where i'm mineing and trades everyone, and begs "somon pllz sll me a r2h plz" for an hour. i don't know about everyone else, but when i mine, i have my pick and my sleeping bag. thats it, i don't take anything i dont need because i need inventory space. i guess what i'm saying is, if your gona beg, do it with a little mor logic and creativity.
However, i do support the idea of helping noobs out. its just a matter of figuring out a way to help noobs that does not alow people to take advantage of our charity. (contests i suppose...).
whew. my fingers are tired.

Personally, I'm almost always nice to new people. One time, there was this group of four newbies, I helped them with a couple of quests, and gave them full bronze, and now every one of them has surpassed me in one way or another, and have helped me with some stuff.

Yeah, it's funny when you help new players and then they get better than you. I made quite a few of my long-time friends that way. You have to be careful how you help newbs out, giving them the idea that begging works out is counter-productive. If done right though, a little push in the right direction can be the difference between someone who quits at level 20 and someone who becomes known throughout Runescape for their amazing skill and devotion to the game.
