This is by far one of the most anticipated films of the year, and it deserves to be. In this third installment, Peter Parker further struggles to keep his life in balance (especially his relationship with MJ, played by Kirsten Dunst), but in doing so his "inner demon", so to speak, is unleashed as his suit suddenly becomes jet-black, giving him even more devastating powers. But with great power, comes great responsibility, so is this the kind of responsibility that he should take? Parker (Tobey Maguire) must control this new side of him while combating with two new villains: Sandman and Venom. And there is of course his friend, Harry (James Franco), who has taken it upon himself to seek vengeance upon Spider-man as the New Goblin (or the "Ultimate Hobgoblin", for you comic book geeks), the role his father left behind. So much conflict, so much to watch.. we all know that. Now for some juice.

Spider-man sequels have a lot to live up to. The first film, Spider-man (2002), grossed $821.7 million worldwide, while the second film, Spider-man 2 (2004), grossed $738.8 million worldwide, and both are placed in the top 20 worldwide box office rankings. That's over $1.6 billion so far. All three films have been directed by Sam Raimi, and have held onto a formidable cast, including Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and James Franco. None are signed on for more sequels, but they have mentioned that they wouldn't mind doing so if the others decide to hop back on the wagon.

To help live up to the film franchise's name, Spider-man 3 has a reported astronomical budget of $250 million, making it the most expensive movie ever made (in US nominal dollars, meaning that with inflation calculated, it tops out at third). Sony Pictures Imageworks is using state-of-the-art visual effects programs to create the spectacular performances you will be seeing in May. Just mere tweaks to five second sequences end up costing thousands and thousands of dollars. And there's more than production costs and technologyO that will prepare for this Spider-man trilogy onslaught. On April 17, Columba Pictures is releasing Spider-man 2.1, a 2-disc extended cut of the film, with eight minutes of new footage and more behind-the-scenes goodies. And to further get fans into the Spider-man mood, Activision will be releasing a multi-platform Spider-man 3 video game along with the movie's release.

As we can all tell, there is plenty riding on this film sequel, with many high expectations.. and I currently have no doubts in my mind that this film will live up to them. The first two were action-packed enough with one villain each. Now imagine two in one, along with potential threads from Harry Osbourn and Spidey's dark half, and a confirmed MJ relationship to balance. This will surely be one of the top films of the year with Shrek and Pirates, and I'm very eager for my chance to give it an official review after it's release.
