uhm... icon_sweatdrop.gif. . . a mnemonic for the stellar classes

(I hate mnemonics... probably 'cause I can't come up with them, best I've ever done was "camels on skis don't mash purple people")

Yup, although you're answer is kinda lacking, I'm sure you knew what it was. Your question.

Ah, and I've made up some funny versions of OBAFGKMLT, but i can't post them here. bluetongue.gif

Lemme guess... Because of F? bluetongue.gif

I found this mnemonic quite hilarious...

That's a good one rat biglaugh.gif. (Oh, the one I put was for Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian [Mississippian, Pennsylvanian], Permian, so at least that part works. I forgot the rest of what I made up sad.gif; 'tas been a good 6 or 7 years.)

Anyway, new question!

Why are most plants green (besides that they have chlorophyll!), and why does the ocean tend to be blue?

Aside from having chlorophyll, plants are green because they reflect green light.

As for why the ocean is blue, there's actually several theories. One is that blue light isn't absorbed by deep ocean water, and thus are scattered and reflected. Another theory is that molecules 'n stuff in the water reflect blue light. Yet another theory is that the ocean reflects the sky (go figure).

Yep, and yes to the first one on the second part. The red (etc.) gets scattered faster than the blue. [So being red in the deep ocean is excellent camouflage, 'cause you're practically invisible.] I thought after I posted it I should've added "why is the sky blue?" but it was too late sad.gif. Three different reasons (that one the blue light gets scattered and the rest of the light passes through).

Your question TheSmile.gif.

Why do dolphins not sleep like humans do?

^^ Cos I couldn't think of anything better at the time *falls asleep*

Because if any air-breathing animal fell asleep in an ocean, it'd probably end in death. bluetongue.gif

Ack, I hate not getting on to check stuff for ages.

I'll take that as a correct, although it's not necessarily true. Take seals, for instance. Although they breathe atmospheric air, they surface in their sleep to breathe without waking up.

The problem with dolphins is that they don't breathe automatically. In other words, if they forget to breathe, they'll suffocate. Hence, if they slept like us human-type folks do...then they would die.

Your question.

Quick comment from the astro geek. OBAFGKMLT is not totally accurate to be described as stellar classes. Since LT is dwarf stars, and they are not trully stars. But I am being sorta semantic on that point. :-p

Need to check in here more often, fun stuff.

We already killed Pluto as a planet, let's not go and define stars now, too!

What keeps a white dwarf from becomming a neutron star, and what stops a neutron star from becomming a black hole?

Erm, a mass can tell you if its a WD, Neutron, or BH, but why is this so?
