I've been having a lot of fun with my latest D&D campaign, and...I kind of miss DS. After Cspace is done with this new "DS2" thing...I may be willing to jump in again. But that means Darky, I'll require your assistance making my new character. <.< Mrah. Anyway. This idea is taken from the D&D v3.5 Eberron Campaign Setting. It's the newest "version" of D&D. In short, it overrides all previous copies because Keith Baker (author) is a god. Not literally. This character idea is based on the Warforged, who happen to be--you guessed it--constructs; or machines made live from arcane magics. These constructs show all of the basic properties of a typical machine, but with a catch. They have what seems to be a dormant personality. They can, in the long run, either choose to embrace their roots as a construct. Or they can choose to adapt the life and culture of your typical humanoid. Here are some stats and thoughts I have, feel free to add your two cents.
Living Construct--These humanoid shaped beings are forged and constructed, made nothing more than of stone, wood, and metal; all sealed with powerful arcane magic. Their height and shape varies as much as any living creature's does, but in the respect that it does not change their overall efficiency. Deep down, they are still machines.
- Vitality Effect (per stat point): Increases your Health by 45
Living Constructs are brutally tough. Their metallic bodies and lack of pain receptors aids in absorbing the brunt of most confrontations.
- Will Effect (per stat point): Increases your Mind by 15
Not only are Constructs durable in body, but they are durable in mind. While there is really no brain of any sort inside of their shells, there is still a personality and an epicenter at which the construct is controlled.
- Endurance Effect (per stat point): Increases your Stamina by 5 (View Special)
Due to their being living machines, it is not easy to tire a Living Construct.
- Arcana Effect (per stat point): Increases your Affinity by 5 (View Special)
Constructs know very little about the very arts that have brought their bodies together. They are often mystified and curious about magic, but all the same, know very little and often do not follow a primitive religion.
- Strength Effect (per stat point): Increases your unarmed and melee weapon damage by 8
Living Constructs are capable of dealing brutal damage with just about anything.
- Accuracy Effect (per stat point): Increases your ranged weapon damage by 2 (4*)
Living Constructs, while still being able to see, are not perfected for aiming at targets, especially when being hampered by the range of humanoid weaponry.
*Stat allowed if ranged weapon is a thrown weapon.
-Special: Choosing a path
Humane Path-By choosing the Humane Path, you are no longer seen as an outsider. You dress for occasions, you may even own several or more sets of human clothes. You know how to greet people and are treated in kind. You have fully adapted to your surroundings and are more in touch with your spiritual self.
-Gain the ability to follow a religion
-No longer viewed as an outsider or abnormal
-Gain +10 Arcana Effect
A.I. Path-By choosing the A.I. Path, you have chosen to forsake all humanoids. You may tolerate some, but in the end; you know you are superior. You have no need for petty things like gods or even material value. As long as everyone knows your place in the world, that is enough.
-Gain immunity to sleep and charm effects by means of spell or mundane application.
-Gain +10 Endurance
Religion--Most Living Constructs do not believe in a religion. It is said, however, that some constructs that seek to grow closer to their fleshy familiars, may adapt some form of religion through a living host. (See Special)
Racial Attributes--
-Immunity to Poison and Disease.
Constructs cannot be poisoned or diseased in anyway. Their anatomy simply does not allow it.
-No natural health regeneration.
Constructs do not have internal organs that work to repair damage or replenish fluids. Constructs may only be healed by means of magic or repairs being made. (Repairs are generated by calculating 1 hour x Stamina. Repairs can only be conducted while logged in or logged off in a safe zone.)
-Restless mind.
Constructs do not require sleep or any kind of rest. They are able to operate 24/7 without any need for relaxation.
-Empty bellies.
Constructs do not require food or drink to live. They cannot even ingest anything "orally" if tried. Their mouths are nothing more than voice boxes, stationary and cold.
-Cantankerous
Constructs are not subtle by nature. They lose all stealth abilities unless properly modified (requires in-game operation).

Here are some "interesting" examples that were taking from a D&D thread that was labeled "How do you play a Warforged."
My personal favorite is to pretend you are the HK protocol droid from Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic.
"Statement: If we do not establish fortifications in this sector, our plans for life expectancy will not bode well."
"Eager Threat: You disappoint me, meatbag. Now set down your weapons and walk to the holding cell."
"Inquiry: Why, whatever do you mean by 'disabled?'"
Other fun ideas were robots like "Bender" from Futurama. Imagine a Warforged Rogue.
"See ya later, chumps and chumpettes!"
"Bite my shiny metal {expletive antidisestablishmentarianized by Cspace}."
"Well...my story kind of teetered off without me learning a lesson."

Heh. Then all you would be able to say is yes, no, and state numbers. Because really, that's all that binary is. I learned the language...and have probably forgotten a few things. It makes a lot of sense when you finally stop and think about it.

Gender: Living Constructs have no true gender...but since influence to humanoids became evident, they have been "Adapting" a gender. They may decide their sex upon observing others and doing what they do, or by simply admiring the valor, cunning, or wisdom of another. Whatever the case, gender has no true influence on Living Constructs. Their voices are still monotonistic, though feature a slight variance from construct to construct.
Names: Living Constructs prefer to name themselves after a favored weapon, form, or word that describes them fully. Though some others prefer to adapt to humanoid life and adopt a more socially acceptable name.
Example names: Judge, Cutter, Racket, Gambit
Eyes: Living Constructs have dead cold eyes. They possess no ability to blink, nor change much direction. Their field of view is restricted by their facing. They often glow with a dim low light. Colors are optional. Default is a light blue.
Mouths: Already mentioned, the Living Construct has no movable jaw and very little resemblance to a mouth. Merely deep grooves that might insinuate a fearsome stoic warrior's mouth.
Ears: Living Constructs do not possess ears of any sort. Ambient noise is drawn in around the entity as if (s)he were a living microphone.
Feet: Living Constructs vary in appearance, but most carry a typical split-toed pattern "boot" for feet. It does not allow quick reflexes to the construct, but it allows a firm stable platform on which to carry out tasks.

Eeh. =\ I noticed that, but Golems are a tad different. They're not assumed to have a mental capacity. They're simply arcane familiars. Living Constructs have a thought process and can solve problems. They can communicate effectively as well.
I'anno. It's the GM's (and Cspace's) decision. Take it or leave it.

Well, Golems are different in DS than in most fantasy games. We haven't gotten to the point where they really enter the story, but they are indeed free-thinking. They don't usually communicate with others who are not golems, but they have mysterious and rarely understood motivations that drive them to become involved in the happenings of Earthia. They usually appear as animated stones, ice, water, or sand, but can "equip" armor and weapons by assimilating them with the same energy that keeps their bodies together.

As for your idea, I do agree that it would be awesome. However, I was planning on entities similar to robots being used as minions for the tech classes. Most are specialized, but maybe I'll make an intelligent type for use as a primary race.
They exist, I'll just need to find a way for them to logically exist in the plot as important free-thinking characters.
