As one who is on a trial of it this week, I'm being forced to add my opinion to this as well, apparently.
Character customisation. There are loads of options, loads. Loooads.
First off, you choose what 'Archtype' you're going to be out of five possible ones.
- Blaster (The long range attacker - Archery and Rifles are just two of the avaliable primary sets)
- Controller (Like a Mesmer in guild wars from what I expect, haven't played)
- Defender (The type that will likely buff the others of the team)
- Scrapper (Two-handed Katanas, Claws, and Martial Arts are some of the sets here. This is the main close-range attacker.)
- Tanker (The one to take all the damage, a Guardian, even.)
Your Origin is what background your abilities come from, doesn't effect them at all, it's mostly for Character Background if you're into Roleplay. Are you a Science experiment gone wrong? Are your abilities a mutation from birth? Technology wizz? Are they magical? Or are they just natural, having spent most of your life training.
Then, once you've chosen those, you pick a Primary Ability set, which will be your main set from which to get your abilities from. Tanks will get their defensive skills, Blasters get their long-range attacks, etc. Each set will vary slightly from each other
(Fire Tanks will have more defenses against Fire, obviously, while Ice Tanks.. y'know), and are otherwise unique from other Archtype's Primary sets.
Then, your secondary set. This adds a different class of abilities
(Like for tanks, this would be their melee attacks). You take these to add a flavor to your Archtype. Whether you're a Scrapper who chose Martial Artist, and wanted either Regeneration abilities or Super-Reflexes. Or a Fire Tank that could choose to either use Fire or Ice skills to attack with.
Phew. And that's the easy bit. Now comes the design. I can't possibly explain it. Ever played a wrestling game like Smackdown? Physical customisations are pretty much that varied. Height, body shape, colour, all sorts of individual costume areas.. Too much.
