To make a long story short... Tiers were previously "SeeD Rank". "SeeD Rank" was previously a named system that we used in Runescape. So Tiers in concept used to have a specific purpose. Now they're seen as a sort of karma system like what some boards have, without any real use.

There is also a concern with over-complicating our guild with too many kinds of ranks (positions, faction ranks, etc.).

Is it time for Tiers to go? If you have something to say about it or you feel strongly about your opinion, please reply. The poll, alone, is not very useful without some words behind the numbers. bluetongue.gif I could actually go against the poll if the reasons are stronger for one side, but there's no way to know unless members reply.

Note that if we stop using Tiers, I won't actually delete the data for them. They'll just be made invisible. This means that the decision doesn't have to be permanent, and it would be easy to bring them back in the future with everyone's current ranks saved. It would be painless. yes.gif

Eh. I don't see a real reason why they need to go, either. They kind of show who the most respectable forum goers are in tehse troubled, desolate times.

I say keep them. I visit a few other forums that have a "Rep" system, where members can add to another members reputation or take away from it depending on the merit/goodness of posts they make. Tiers are like that, in a way. It lets members (That know what they are) know who's been around for a while or who someone that can really help them are.

Tehse troubled desolate times or not. If you were to remove tiers, could you implement a "Reputation" system (With certain boundaries, of course), so members could keep track of who people are? With a system like that, members have a say in who is good or bad. With it now, it's all up to you. (Not that tahts a bad thing.) bluetongue.gif But it'd help push us a bit more to 'member led'.
Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position.
Such a heavy burden now to be "The One".

I figure that anyone could figure out how respectable someone is just by viewing a post or two that they've made. If someone's a good person, it usually shows through in their posts bluetongue.gif One shouldn't need any sort or reputation system just to tell if someone's respectable. The tiers can also almost end up being a measurement of how active someone is. If you're inactive, you won't be getting any tiers. But if you're active, you likely will be. Of course, there is more to it than that, but that -is- a major factor.

Also, a tier system like we currently have can end up being partially biased or inaccurate. It doesn't necessarily show who does good things, just who is -noticed- doing good things. Or someone who's been a good person might just be forgotten when it is decided that tiers will be updated, simply because there were a lot of people who were going to be raised and one name was easy to lose. Stuff like that bluetongue.gif

I also can't really see any -helpful- purpose they can serve, but I can think of a few bad things they could lead to. Like people thinking that the admin is unfair or mean or something or has a grudge against them, or people getting jealous. Even if it never leads to open conflict, there could be a few hidden dislikes, simply because someone has a higher tier than them. Or the other way around. People looking down on others because they have a -lower- tier than them XD

... Pretty much, I just don't see any reason why they really -should- be there. It seems like things might be -easier- without them bluetongue.gif

keep em, it helps new members know who they can ask for help and not. if new person has a question about our forums, someone with a high tier will "probally" be able to answer/help out more than someone with no/low tier rank.

...its also kind of cool. biglaugh.gif

It's a little demeaning in my opinion.

Could just be because I only have one tier, though.

I see nothing wrong with them. I think they're a nice mark of your achievements here at CurvedSpace.

Having a single number to determine someone's progress/respect doesn't seem completely deserving. It doesn't say anything about what they actually have done, what they're like, etc.. And people can help in completely different ways, so how can you make a number out of each of them?

Maybe we should work on the other fields: "Arbiter, Role, Title, Sphere". It's rather confusing with so many.

I suggest for now they should probably remain visible, at least until we're ready to implement arbiter ranks as suggested here (presuming it does go ahead, so far responses have been fairly positive). In my mind it would be best to go straight from one system to the other, rather than have having the confusion of both or neither temporarily. I agree with just about what everyone is saying, honestly. I think for now they're probably worth keeping, but once we have a better, fairer system in place then they'll probably no longer have a purpose and can be hidden. Particularly what Darkness was talking about current tiers just being who is noticed doing the right thing, having multiple people capable of issuing promotions should help considerably there.

Anyway I voted 'no', but that's really more of a conditional temporary thing.
