This branches from suggestions in both of the recent Tier discussions. While I'm not sure we should introduce a new Tier-like point system, there is a rating system built into the forums that I can turn on.

I haven't actually tried it, but I'm pretty sure it's a "1 to 5" thing like what we have in the gallery. The rating shows up in a member's profile.

I didn't plan to turn it on since it might cause friction between some members... But if we all want it, I'll set it up.

How is it different from Tiers, though? From what little you said (bluetongue.gif), it sounds just like a different version of the tiers, just with a fixed endpoint. (Or is that the point?)

Thing I was thinking of when I considered this, members could (under legitimate circumstances) add to or take from another users reputation/rating given good/bad things they do for the community and forums.

There will need to be some sort of restriction from spamming up + Ratings so it's not completely unfair, and the same for - ratings.

Maybe members could only add or take from one mark per... week? That way one person couldn't jack up the rating of another overnight.

Only difficulty I see is how to implement it. I don't know if there are some mods out there for it for this type of board, but I know there was for a few others.

The new Tier system that I was suggesting would be similar to this, with members of the correct rank being able to each promote one other member once per week.

The Tiers we have now aren't really a member rating thing. This would just be like the gallery ratings, but inside member profiles.

hmm this would be cool, hoowever if someone starts to get loads of ranks, then cspace should check into it. it wouldn't be hard for someone to bribe others to log in to just vote for whoever they were told to. other than that, it looks sweet, thumb.gif

I'm not entirely comfortable with the idea. I've seen how it works on another forum, and it's fine, but... and I hate that it is this way... the members there are almost all adults with some mature teenagers thrown in, and take it as a fun extra thing that means nothing. We have all ages here, and some of our members are still trying to get a handle on taking things in the spirit intended or letting slights by people they don't really know go. I can see this being something likely to cause conflicts, kind of in the same way jokes get out of hand around here sometimes.

Perhaps if it were required to provide a reason in order to actually add to or remove from a rating. Still a potential for conflicts, but it would make it easier to distinguish between deserved and undeserved additions (I'm thinking this mainly to manage the negative side). Or if it's possible to have it so it's only positive, or if only certain groups can remove.

Or, like Cspace's suggestion, have it so you... prove yourself, essentially, as mature enough to rate objectively.

*shrug* I know we can't always prevent disagreements, but I'd hate to see something innocent provoke anything.

In my opinion, the five star ratings system would not be suitable here. We can't leave an easily misused system like that to a forum like this.

Also, being only five stars, it'll be cramped very quickly, and it might as well be everyone at five stars.

That's Maxi's way of saying everyone here is a winnar.

There's enough concern for this to not be implemented. I'd ask anyone who still wants ratings to look at my other idea for Tiers. That should be like what was requested, but solve the problems of a numbered point system.

I don't necessarily think a 'rating' system is a great idea in my opinion, but if others are all for it, it's definitely fine with me. But yeah, it could spark unnecessary tension over such a little thing..I'm afraid that sometimes the system could be misused in a mean way by an upset member.

And anyways, I do like the Tier system bluetongue.gif If we could find a better way to improve what we have now (as in, not just Cspace doing the rankings..), I'm sure it'd be fine. But in anything we use, I suggest there shouldn't be an option for anyone to remove a ranking/degrade someone. That in itself is what I would be most worried about =\ If there was a system were rankings could be added and not removed, then a member wouldn't have too much to get upset about.

Tiers are a better system in my opinion. I think Cspace should hand out "rankings," not the members.

I know it's kind of redundant to post to say so, but I'm going to have to vote 'no' as well. There's some merit to the idea, but I think the potential for it to upset people isn't really worth it. It's easy enough for someone (particularly someone new) to turn a lot of the regulars against them without meaning to, we've seen it happen before. We probably don't want a system where some people will be watched constantly for the slightest slipup as justification for lowering their rating. I've seen such a thing happen on one or two extreme occasions with the mod warning logs, but a member rating system would be visible to everyone and thus more damaging.

However if we want to incorporate Maxi's idea of incorporating it just to stick everyone at 5 stars forever, then I'm okay with it. grnwink.gif
