Zerachiel Izanami
Age 26 (as of EotN)
Born the 108th day, Season of the Phoenix, 1252 DR.
Arkjok Ward, Kourna
While Zerachiel's birth name is undisclosed, certain details of his youth are known. He is the eldest son of a Kournan soldier, his mother's family had worked as farmers near Gandara for generations. While he showed a certain natural aptitude for physical combat and intended to follow in the footsteps of his father, too much of his time was required tending to the farm or minding his two younger siblings for any real training. Like many Kournans he understood well the importatance of a strong military and had great pride in the Kournan Warmarshals, particularly Varesh Ossa. In his heart though he wanted adventure and glory. He spent most of his spare time either in Yohlon Haven trying to glean information out of passing travellers, or exploring the countryside extensively. At the age of 20 a small amount of Krytan refugees (fleeing the unstability brought on by the death of the Mursaat) settled nearby, and through them he heard legends of a group of great Tyrian heroes who together with the spirit of the great Turai Ossa had achieved Ascension, and of the events leading up to the fulfillment of the Flameseeker Prophecies. While he did not have the freedom to run off and seek adventure as he wished, these tales inspired him to train himself in combat using makeshift weapons lying around the farm.
All this came to an end when in 1273DR Varesh began experimenting with demons in an attempt to fuel her desire for a unified Elona under her command. Zerachiel's father was killed, one of many ritual sacrifices intended to help open a rift to Torment. The ritual failed and the deaths were blamed on Corsairs, but Zerachiel knew otherwise. Disillusioned, he bargained safe transport to Istan for his family from a group of Corsairs based in Dajkah Inlet. Knowing of the distrust between Istan and Kourna, he attempted to erase all traces of his old life and arranged new identities for his family. Once they were well settled in and unlikely to be discovered, he picked up a scythe from their farming equipment, adopted a robe and hood to hide his Kournan appearance and left home. Varesh Ossa had to be stopped, and the Sunspears seemed like the only force that would stand a chance against Kourna's military power. He knew that if it were to come to an invasion, his knowledge of the Kournan landscape might make all the difference, provided he did not reveal his true origins in the process. Most of all though he wanted revenge, and it was with that in mind that he adopted the guise of his guardian deity Balthazar and joined the Sunspears under the pseudonym Zerachiel Izanami, an angel of death.
Woo, that took a while to write. It's not all that long, but I had to look up some details and try to make sure that the timeline would be fairly consistent with the known events in the game. Not too much is known about Varesh in the years before the events of NF, but it seemed logical that she might attempt to summon Abaddon about a year after he made himself known, when Abaddon and Menzies corrupted the Tomb of Primeval Kings. Also I liked the idea of the Sunspears "stumbling" upon what would become the Sunspear Sanctuary through the underhanded help of one of their own.
