, seems mail, maille, chainmail, and chainmaille are all considered correct, even if the latter two are also considered redundant.
They may be
considered correct, but in actuality they aren't. Maille is the only true and correct term from a historical point of view. This has been beaten into my head by the umpteen archaeologists and historians I've run across in reenactment groups.
Back onto decorative maille: as I said, the most decorative I've seen is edging done with gold rings. Almost all decoration went on surcoats, shields and banners. Going to a proper convention, I would be absolutely shocked if there was anything more than edging on anyone's maille. It was never, ever made to be decorative. It was made to be practical.
