Actually try Miner Disturbance. I cant stop playing it. The concept is pretty good; dig down to get more ore; further you dig; more hazards there are (Gas; massive pools of water etc) the trick however is that to double your score you've gotta get out again.
The trick there is that the further you dig; the closer the volcano gets to errupting.
Downright addictive; someone stop me!

It does seem fairly derivative...
Probably not the kind of thing you mean Stuffy, but have you seen Tetris DS? There's a few interesting takes on multiplayer tetris there, in a competitive sense at least. Of course it has the usual vs mode tetris, where you can create junk rows for your opponent by clearing more of your own at once. Also has Mario Kart-like items though, So you can use shells to destroy some of your own rows, mushrooms to speed up the speed of their pieces falling or bananas to suddenly horizontally flip your opponent's screen. Sounds kind of dumb, addictive though.
The one I found particularly interesting though was a variation where you start in the middle, and one player is dropping blocks from below and another from above. You're working in pretty much the same space, and when you clear lines it tips the playing field up or down, giving you more room and your opponent less. Just kind of cool in that you have to try to avoid setting your pieces in a way that will allow the other person to exploit your hard work.

There was a site long ago... forgot what it's called(centerscore?), but its two flagship games were Wormhole and Icetris.
Wormhole was 100% win.
Icetris was fun because
-you could play against 3 other people
-you could control who gets attacked with junk lines
-you Had to attack because otherwise the junk goes to you.
It was very much like jagex in the beginning, but with one fatal flaw: When it tried a membership method, they left the game virtually untouched and only offered clans and a few different items as incentive. Think all of RS as a nonmem with, oh say, just adding agility as a member. Nobody became a member(I couldn't because I didn't have funds at the time) and eventually they shut down with the creator of the game vowing not to sell the gamecode to anybody. Kinda like taking the ball and going home.
Edit: K, now I like funorb. Looks like you can compare scores with people in your friends list. Just took over first place in a game from OM

ohh you guys playing the chess?
Its pretty awesome (well its chess; but the whole raking this is good)
Was playing a guy called lewis; was about to take his queen; and my flatmate turned his computer off (Severing my internet!)
Arcanists is pretty good too. Think worms but where you can summon stuff (Like dragons, knights and for some reason trees??!)
