So long, and thanks for all the halflings.

Gary Gygax, beloved uber-nerd and creator of D&D, has failed his saving throw against death.

Ernest Gary Gygax (July 27, 1938 – March 4, 2008) was an American writer and game designer, best known for co-creating the pioneering role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) with Dave Arneson, and co-founding the company Tactical Studies Rules with Don Kaye in 1974. Gygax is generally acknowledged as the father of the role-playing game.[2]

On March 4th, the Associated Press confirmed reports of Gygax's death that originally were made by Troll Lord Games,[3] a small role-playing game company Gygax had been working with.[4][5] He had been in poor health, suffering multiple strokes and a near-heart attack. He died the morning of March 4, 2008 at his home in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

Oh my gosh... That's sad. sad.gif And I don't think there's any cleric out there strong enough to revive him...

*Sigh*... What a shame...
Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position.
Such a heavy burden now to be "The One".
Born to bear and read to all the details of our ending
To write it down for all the world to see.

So much of what is now played on computers (both standalone and online), came about due to that little old pencil-paper-and-funny-dice game, Dungeons and Dragons. I dare say, there would even not be a RuneScape, were it not for that game.

Too often we forget who led us to the place where we now stand. People are too quick to dismiss D&D as that satanic fantasy game. Or that game that the nerds at school got together and played for hours on end. It brought together elements of wargaming (almost exclusively military up to that time), fantasy, chivalry, horror and science fiction and created a new style of gaming. Many designers were inspired by this new style and started creating their own games and genres. This revolution is responsible in large part for every Final Fantasy, World of Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo, Halo, Runescape, MMORPG and gaming engine that depends upon levels and points and random chances for success or failure with every action.

So raise a glass of your favorite beverage and mourn the passing of one of the old gamers of yore, who was in many ways, our very own version of Merlin, and who inspired us to pull out that sword from the stone and with it, slay many foul beasts.

No matter how you feel about him, or anyone else, remember this: Without such people, you wouldn't be playing Guild Wars, RuneScape, or whatever game you choose to play. Respect that.

... Oh, I almost regret D&D's creation now...

The below is not directed at Darkness, but rather the comment he made.

Comments like that are {expletive ninja'd by Cspace}ing annoying. I get you don't like RuneScape, but come on, you should know full well what that meant. And if not, it meant (and means) without Gary Gygax NO RPGs would exist like they do now.

Oh and yes, I am mad. I'm getting tired of people ripping on RuneScape, and yet not actually doing anything to change it. If people hate it so much, then you have one of four options 1) Move on 2) Get a job there and help mold it 3) Write on The Official RuneScape Forums (and, yes, they do listen) or 4) Complain and annoy people. Quite frankly, you can annoy others, but what's the {expletive ninja'd by Cspace}ing point? Oh, yes, hearing me curse. =\

My apologies if this seems out of nowhere, but it is really annoying being on a site where nearly everyone makes fun of the game I love to play. Oh, I am well aware that it isn't the best game in the world, but guess what? When I have a problem, I actually try to help the situation. Going around complaining about things, whether RuneScape or not, doesn't help - offering sound advice does. If you don't like how RuneScape is, then why don't you just let it go or offer sound advice?

I'm sorry guys, perhaps I am overreacting, but it just annoys me to no end that people continue to make fun of the game, and yet do nothing to positively further it. For example, I may have problems with things, but I don't go around complaining about it all the time (not saying you're complaining all the time, but why complain at all?). If you do not play the game, and have no plans to, then why continue bringing it up? That does not help.

I am well aware that people probably have bad experiences, but why allow that to drag you down? I just do not see a point in allowing a game to do that to you, I have quit games before and guess what? I don't play them anymore. They don't haunt me, either. I have no clue if you played RuneScape actively or not, but to be honest does that matter? If you don't like RuneScape, why continue to bring it up? I can name a lot of people here who don't play, but I do not see them bringing it up.

I am probably over-reacting, but I just wanted to mention this. I don't see many people who play runescape joining up, and those that do tend to leave after a bit. I am well aware that there are people still here that do, but I don't see them actively posting as much (although, yes, there are those few who actively post in the SeeD Faction). All in all, I really think it's from this negative view of RuneScape I see around. Again, I am not directing this at Darkness - I am just upset because I get tired of people dragging this negative view around - If you hate/dislike RuneScape that much, then why bring it up at all? The only reason I can see is to negatively effect other's point of view. I, for one, will continue playing the game because I enjoy playing it. Others do not have to, but I don't go throwing my view around.

Yes, I am doing that here, but how often do I? In fact, I don't remember ever making a post like this. I probably have. I don't feel like looking it up. I know there are people who don't like RuneScape, but there are people who do, and if I am to continue actively using this forum it would be nice if the posts like the one above could stop. It is really hard to invite RuneScape players here, when [what seems like a lot] of the people here dislike RuneScape to the extent of making posts about how much RuneScape "sucks" (which, then, leads to "no it doesn't!" etc).

Okay, I went on a tangent, and I apologize for that - but what I don't apologize about is saying this. I am getting tired of the negative views surrounding RuneScape, I just don't see a point in continuing them over and over. If you don't like it, good for you, and if you do then good for you too. But why continue to bring it up? Let it go. You're free. Stop worrying about it. You don't need to care. It's over. You either no longer play, you never have, or you do. No matter what, you don't need to worry about it. Relax. Move on. Worry about what's for dinner. By the way, does potatoes sound good? 'kay

I was not -making fun- of it; I was simply stating my regret at its creation. I wasted a few good years of my life playing that game XD If I had intended to make fun of it, it would have been quite clear. I would have said something like. "Runescape sucks." Or. "Whoever plays Runescape is t3h ghey." Or something like that. I'm sure you get the picture. And sure. My comment might have been a bit more cynical that those two. But I'm a cynical person. Oh well.

Besides, what I said was a personal opinion, and was stated as a personal opinion. Statements like "Runescape sucks." or anything are still opinions, but in that case, the person speaking is -declaring-, -without a doubt-, that Runescape sucks. and by stating it in such a way can be said to be making a -direct attempt- to force his views on others. That would be making fun of it. But even if -I- had gone so far as to say "-I- think Runescape sucks.", your post would still be far more uncalled for than it should have been.

... Nor do I completely see how my comment could be considered a 'complaint'. I didn't say, "Runescape needs better graaaphiiiiiics/gaaaameeeppllaaaay/staaaff meeembers/everything really! Why does Jagex suck so much?" I didn't say, "*whine* Whyyyy did that silly man make D&D? Because of him, we all suffer under Runescape's indefinite suckageness!" I didn't even say, "This cereal is crap." No, what I said was far from a complaint...

Note also that I said I 'almost' regret D&D's creation. Not that I really do regret it. I am well aware that RPGs would not exist as we know them today. If not for that fact, I -would- have say I regret D&D. And clearly, I've somehow managed to move on from Runescape, considering I never log on, never really post about it, never post in the SeeD forums, or really anything else associated with it. And you say "If you hate/dislike RuneScape that much, then why bring it up at all?", and then continue throughout your post to say things like "If you do not play the game, and have no plans to, then why continue bringing it up?" or "If you don't like RuneScape, why continue to bring it up?". But no, wait... -I- did not bring up Runescape in this topic! Indeed, -you- did! Alas! Wither, wohin! Hence thereforeth, calleth the angry goat! You must be mistaken.

Anyway. I feel no urge to say more. So I leave you with one last thought...
