Steam is a PC gaming application made by Valve to distribute and sell PC games (Both by them and sponsored by other companies) directly over the internet. It integrates with the games themselves so you can access it and it's options while in-game.

The main thing about it is that it has profiles for each player-account and player-group / community, and an accessible friends menu which can not only show if a friend or group member is online, but if they're playing a game and which one. If they are playing a game (say for example, Team Fortress 2), then you might have the option of joining the same server directly from the friends menu if the game supports it. ~~You can see an example of a profile by the link in my signature~~

If you play or have played any Valve games, being the Half-life series and mods, then you'll either have it already or will get it if you choose to play them again.
