I suppose that's a valid point, but I have to say the logic is a little vague.
It makes you wonder though. Where did they get the money to buy all those clams?

That project was led by a college professor who wanted to put the world into perspective for his geography students.
He never did succeed with engineering bulletproof clams that shoot lasers, but he did manage to get his students thinking about geopolitical issues from another perspective. He was never heard from again after a horde of giant clams destroyed his office and went on a rampage across the campus.
I guess I agree with you about the incident, because after all it was a geography class... But to answer your question: Yes, giant clams were really there.
