Hey there, fellas. I'm sure this has been done before, but I've got a little project due for English, and I'm allowed to have some input from others.
Here's the premise: I have to provide an argument against the accusations of violent video games causing individuals to recreate what they see.

QUOTE
TL;DR, I need an argument against a would-be Jack Thompson.

Here's another side. I'm not allowed to do research. I can only use basic knowledge of this topic, and form ideas and THREE solutions and/or propositions against this accusation. That being "Violent Video Games Cause Real World Violence.

I cannot quote. I cannot copy directly. But I know that this community would be the best place to go looking for help or input on this subject.

Here's what I need from you guys. I need different accounts on why you do or do not think video games influence people in general. And I need it to be serious and in depth. (AKA, please reply if you have something serious. This thread may very well be reviewed by my professors.)

I have been given permission to post here, asking for input. If more information is needed, please let me know and I'll fill you in with what is needed. Other than that, I'm just strictly asking for your viewpoints.

Are you Pro-JackThompson? Or Anti?
Gimme yer best, fellas.
Thanks.

Eh, here's something I just wrote just for you. Not very long, I admit.

I do not believe that video games cause violent behavior for a number of reasons. The most concrete reason is a matter of statistics. The violent gamers that are constantly talked about make a very small portion of the video gaming community. If video games are the sole factor in making people violent, why does it only affect a small group of people? In order for me to believe that normal people can be turned into a sociopath with nothing more than a game, I would have to see a far larger part of the
population that plays these games becoming sociopaths. After All, any self-respecting study acknowledges that flukes occur (these flukes being rare even for flukes) even when there has been an attempt to isolate the variable; something that to my knowledge has not even been attempted.

I also am at odds with the core belief against video games: people apparently come to think that what occurs in video games is true. A functioning person with a normal state of mind should be able to tell the difference between reality and fiction. Most people that could be claimed to be abnormal will have this ability as well. Any 13 year old who believes that he can go kill aliens, demons, and/or mutants probably has bigger problems than his love of video games.

But, for the sake of the argument, let's say that there is someone who is directly influenced by video games and becomes violent. Let's say he isn't unstable or anything; he's just impressionable. Somebody that impressionable could most likely be influenced by any media. He couldn't just be isolated from video games. He would have to be isolated from movies, cartoons, comic books, the news, and possibly even writings on topics or genres such as history, religion, horror, suspense, action, adventure, or romance. This individual would also have to be guarded whenever he left his home from any bad elements. Such a person would have been exposed to and acted on something far earlier.

My best involves profanity and logical fallacies.

1.) Anyway, sane people do not go crazy because of a game

2.) Violently crazy people are violently crazy, video game usage is irrelevant.

3.) The movies are FAR worse than any game.

4.) DERP DERP DERP DERP

Jesus, it's like saying SAW will make me kill everyone.
I propose, that driving around town during 11AM to 11PM makes me more violent than my 16 years of video game use.

Contrary to popular belief, violence in real life stemming from video games is a correlation, not causation. Jack says otherwise. There are also external factors. Environment, pre-existing social or mental disorders, and obviously a previous criminal record. The whole thing is a post hoc argument.

If people can act out their anger and kill and brutalize on the games, there's a severely less chance that they'll do it irl.
