Downloading Update?

I have been hearing from people that the new update fails, and freezes their system etc.

Well, I am new to PS3 in gerneral, as I play Xbox360 too, and with the updates for PS3, will it tell you their is a update you do you have to find it somewhere? For the Xbox360, it pops up before you play a game, and says you have to download this update before playing online.

Also when I find update should I download it? I dont want it to mess everything up.

He had some links to sites for downloading ps3 games. B&
