Short of going to Google for an answer, is it possible to take my single player map from Alpha and somehow put it online on a private server for some friends and myself?
And if so, would anyone know how to do something like that?

What is the POINT of minecraft? I thought it was some zombie-esque game, and you build defenses, or something like that.

It is. Except multiplayer mode isn't quite ... working. Yet. Which is why it's still in a 'creative' phase, where you're told "dupe whatever you like, make whatever you like. Just don't {expletive ninja'd by Cspace} with other people's stuff". It will be incredible once inventories are stored server side, health and mobs work... They'll be a proper economy and everything!
But yes. You're meant to stave off enemies which spawn in the dark (in caves and at night) by making safehouses, tools and weapons.
