Just to let you know, if you're playing RS and get a popup, it might not just be spyware.

Today, I got the newest updates for Norton Anti-Virus, Ad-Aware, and Spybot Search-&-Destroy. after installing the updates, I scanned with all three programs and deleted everything I found. After scanning, I came here for a bit, then went on RS to mine iron.

In the middle of mining, I got a popup (asking me if I'm sick of popups... *******s). This quickly maximized itself to a fullscreen thingy without the shell Windows normally places, and I could not close it. I finally Ctrl-Alt-Del'd myself out, and wrote a nasty letter to JAGeX telling them to fire their ad company or I'd withdraw my request for Christmas P2P. 'Course, since I'm not P2P anyway, I'll just get an auto-response saying that they didn't read it and I should re-send it if I want them to care. This, of course, will trigger another auto-response, so I'm not going to bother.

So, if you see popups on RS, it might not be spyware. Especially if it's a fullscreen, shelless advert that you can't close (the same kind that came from the company that they fired a few days ago).

This has convinced me to install the Google toolbar. I'm utterly pissed off at JAGeX. Now, think about this... I was just mining. What if someone else got the popup when they were about to eat, thus causing them to die? Would they get their stuff back? I was lucky; others might not be and JAGeX is going to hear about it from everyone affected.
Those who will remember, will speak fondly of the warm morning breeze.

The problem as I see it:

Jagex aren't too likely to listen to F2p customer support (as you mentioned), and members doesn't get any advertizing as well. Therefore the only ways it'll improve is if enough are sent in and some get through by f2p people, or if members people are playing on free servers and it happens to them...

Runescape never has full screen adverts, the only time it did was 2 weeks ago when one of the Ads went weird. Adaware/norton etc wont pick up any adverts built into freeware programs, such as screensavers, msn plus, and if you accidentally install these "sponsers" you wont be able to delete them until you uninstall the whole parent program.

Ps, you wont get a responce until at least Monday, as customer support don't work on weekends.

Remember, they are not forcing you to play, and you are getting it for free

Oop, I was scared of getting a virus, but I just realized, I was on F2P... and it was one of those full-screen pop-ups, Garhhhhh Whatever_anim.gif . Well, I will just post this here also.
So everyone knows I won't be here for like 2 weeks during Christmas Holidays, so well, everyone have a happy Christmas or Hannukah (probably spelled that wrong, sorry Jews).

I think some of our P2p members should write letters. I have a few ad programs and im going to find more to rid of spyware, and I am going to get the google toolbar.

FYI, there is usually a close link hidden somewhere at the bottom of those ads. Just scroll down and click on it. If that doesn't work, defenestrate your computer.

QUOTE ( Runescape.com)
7th December 2003 - Pop up advert problem (fixed)

It has come to our attention that one of the advertising agencies that supplies adverts for our website has been careless and was running an advert which causes multiple pop-up windows and/or virus false-alerts.
We are obviously extremely annoyed at the advert-agency for allowing this to happen. We know how annoying pop-up adverts are, and explicity told them they must not run them. We have now fixed this problem by disabling ALL adverts from this advert agency. All their adverts and code have been removed from our site in response, so the problem should no longer occur. If you are still seeing pop-up windows at runescape.com then try rebooting your computer. If the problem still persists then let us know, remembering to tell us the name of the advert causing the problem.

Also I'd like to reassure players that if they saw a warrning about a virus called "JS/NoClose" they do not need to worry too much. This is not a real virus, but rather a way of opening many pop-up windows. It does not cause any other damage or problems, and I believe all you have to do to erase it is reboot your computer. So if you are seeing these warnings, please reboot your machine. If the problem persists after reboot then let us know.

I sincerely apologise for this. Like I say I'm severely disappointed with the advert-agency for doing this. I'll do what I can to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Andrew

Odd, while I was reading this, I got a pop-up telling me to buy a pop-up blocker....

I agree with Ryl, you are getting this game for free so there are going to be some attachments to it.

I have never had any advertisements of the sort, and I am f2p. The only time that has happened, was my fault (I clicked on the advertisement banner directly above the game window).

I know it's a free game. My point is that they said that they got rid of the popups, which they didn't. Also, they rarely read the F2P customer support queries. Unless it's about someone impersonating them, they usually just tell you to send it again (and, as I said, they'll ignore that one too). I even send them a report saying that a member (P2P) I know could not load customer support. He did everything he could and it wouldn't work - couldn't ask them for help, and couldn't cancel his account if he wanted. I stated clearly that this guy is (was) a member, and JAGeX could be in legal trouble if they didn't give him a method of ending the subscription - and I still got the "we're ignoring you, send it again" response.

Back to my response.

I never install stuff that has spyware (the big ones like KaZaA installs, for instance... if it's small like a tracking cookie or summat, I don't really care).

Here's what happenned: I turned on the computer, checked my email, and turned on my AIM away message. When I came back, I updated (and scanned with) not only Norton, but also Ad-Aware and Spybot, then went on here and RuneScape. I did not go to any other sites beforehand. Also, I know I didn't click a banner, because I was mining iron at the time in Rimmington. I didn't need to move the mouse so fast that it would accidentally leave the game applet. The smaller version of the popup (before it exploded) came up while both rocks were empty, so I didn't click that on accident.

Thus, my only conclusion is the popup came from RS... especially since it's the same one they "removed" a few weeks ago. The reason I'm mad is because they claim that they don't have popups and that they got rid of the company providing them, yet I still got one (and at that, a fullscreen, unclosable popup). I can tolerate the banners. I can tolerate Spybot popping up to tell me that it blocked the download of "Avenue A, Inc" (thank God for Resident). I can even tolerate that darn CheapTickets flash ad. ****, I wouldn't even mind a pop-under. But, I won't accept a popup - especilly one like this. It may be rare, but it's still happening. Besides, as I said, what if someone died (on RS) because of that ad - their in-game death was caused by something outside the game that shouldn't be there, so JAGeX should be responsible. What if it was a member on a free server? What if? What if? What if?
Those who will remember, will speak fondly of the warm morning breeze.

It's happening to me again. Gotta reboot. I think they should definitely fire that advertising agency. I also hope they take legal action, too. That means they'll have more money. (So there will be less of a possibility of raising it to 10$)
