they were in a different room as the fireplace
or
they didn't light the fire due to the snow fall in thier living room
or
they live in an igloo and the fire melted the igloo and now they are wet and cold ; )

Hahaha,

Close, but the thermostat was turned to cold, and the fireplace wasn't generating enough heat to heat the house.

just to let you guys know, this particular lateral thinking puzzle was from a book.

im going to give you the answer, straight from the book

QUOTE
The thermostat, which controlled the temperature of the entire house by switching on and off the central heating, was very close the the fireplace. as the air near the fireplace, and the thermostat, warmed up, the thermostat switched off the central heating even though the rest of the house was cold

i must admit, i wouldnt have got that if someone else posted that!

well then with that in mind, heres a simlar puzzle involving the fireplace

Ben and wanda had their ther thermostat moved to a hallway location that was far from the fireplace. later, on a cold evening, that followed a warm day, they built a fire in the fireplace. again, they were soon colder than they would have been if they had not built the fire. they had shut off the central heating entirely; the thermostat and the central heating are irrelevant here.

what was the problem this time??? conf.gif conf.gif

(this one is not as technical as the first fireplace thinking puzzle, but still technical...)

once again i will be throwing in hints and stuff

they opened the window cuz of the warm day, and forgot to shut it, thereby messing with the thermostat
