Need Some Opinions on tk game

at my dads ive decided to make a seperate game, but i dunno how to lay it out, like should i have it final fantasy 1-6 style, each town, city, forest and cave has its own board (map) but to get to others u travel on a large board reachin to all of them (world map)

or like the Gameboy Zeldas, its one large map, cities connected and stuff, the only time u go on a different board (map) is for forests and "dungeons"

Personally, I'd go for the first one, but that's just how I've been brought up with RPG's.. Good luck with it.
