Sometimes I just hate people abusing Freedom of speech. An example... Kanye West. How arrogant can he get? 400% of Bush's Cabinet is black. Bush has donated to the AIDS Cause in Africa more than twice. How arrogant can people get with Freedom of Speech. It's something we take for granted, and should be limited. But too bad it can't. I'm not saying it wasn't a great idea, I'm not saying it is a great idea either. But the people who abuse it are just dumb.

It isn't dumb. If it wasn't for this amendment, everybody who was an underdog and made a difference would have been struck down before they could do anything.

I.e. Martin Luther King Jr. The one that would come to everyone's mind.

ticktockclok is right.
even though it does cause minor (and sometimes not-so-minor) inconveniences, freedom of speech is what allowed America to advance at such a fast rate.

Is flagburning legal? If it is, why would the people who burn the flag of the country the reside in live in that country?

America advanced quickly?

Blacks didn't get equal rights until the 1960's and even still are discriminated against a fair bit, women didn't get the vote in the US for a while after other countries and America still went around parading, acting like the 'Champion of Democracy', but domestically was not giving all its citizens equal rights.

Hell yea that is absouletly correct and everything Kanye West said was correct this guy is trying to get 7 billion dollars for the bird flu when I bet you alot more Americans died in the flood then these tiny *** birds coming down here and giving me some bird flu he only gave about some million for flood relief. A black cabinet you say come on man come on Colin Powell ain't black Condoleeza Rice ain't black those are two white people in a black persons uniform. There just 2 pawns on the goverments chess board. Don't go saying stuff that you know ain't true.

Bird flu is pretty serious. If we get the strain that can be passed from human to human, anywhere in the world, it would probably be worse than the influenza epidemic after WWI. Just because it's not bad right now, doesn't mean that we should turn a blind eye to it.

But wouldn't you agree that prevention would be the best thing to do with Bird Flu?

America's been around for two hundred years and some decades, whereas countries in Europe have been around for what, two millennia? more than that, i think. and you've still got race riots breaking out in France, and whatever else that i won't bother looking up right now. yeah, in America we've got our fair share of problems, but at least people are allowed to speak up against them (whether that changes anything is another question - although Martin Luther King Jr. and various others did seem to have some success in that department).

at any rate, with or without freedom of speech, America certainly took more initiative than did other British colonies (maybe with the exception of India), choosing to fight for independence rather than wait a couple more centuries to wait for freedom to be handed to it.

and that's why America did advance so quickly. if not so much in social aspects, then in economic and military ones. America's had the rest of the world struggling to catch up - though now China's actually starting to catch up, with its people having reproduced like rabbits. i'm not sure about the population growth now, though. i heard they imposed a heavy tax or something on having more children than one, so families throw babies into rivers or something. of course, with this, i'm going on hearsay.
