I am your father, and your father's father,
From my remains all were born.
You can witness me at the time of my true death,
Be it when my life comes to an end or by my desecrated corpse.
For a time my brilliance will permeate the heavens,
Yet I must pay a horrible price to do so.
I helped put mankind in it's place,
For I come from far beyond the reaches of man.

I can safely say it is not religiously oriented.
As for the big bang, you're on the right track. Notice I metioned a corpse, so think something that goes in boom even when it's dead that is in space.

Oh. Wow. I don't know any good riddles .
I dig out tiny caves, and store gold and silver in them. I also build bridges of silver and make crowns of gold. They are the smallest you could imagine. Sooner or later everybody needs my help, yet many people are afraid to let me help them. Who am I?

I could be alive,
I could be dead.
It's rather cruel to try and find out,
yet everyone loves to imagine my untimely demise.
I may be a bit aloof,
but there's no need to lock me up.
