Things are only worth that which people are willing to pay for them. This is the relationship between demand and price. As demand goes up, price goes up. Diamonds are obviously a substance with high demand. They are demanded because people say they want them, and people want them for reasons such as usefulness, historical importance, or aestetic value. Diamonds can be used for cutting things, though laser is now, pardon the pun, phasing that out. Diamond powder is still excellent for polishing. Historically important items containing diamonds increase value, not because of the diamond's usefulness, but because of the historical nostalgic value of the diamond. Finally, people are simply attracted to the looks. Polished diamonds (relatively new in history), have always had a high appeal, simply because they are shiney. The color, shape, and rarity are additional factors.

Diamonds are also wanted because they are difficult to obtain as they form in high pressure and high temperature areas such as the deep ocean and volcanoes which means the prices itself increase because of this... I can go into more technical detail but i dont think you need this for your assignment

Actually, diamonds aren't rare as they are advertised to be. De Beers mostly controls how many are released each year, even though they have plenty. So rarity isn't the problem, it's the abundance. eek7.gif

Meh, I don't think I hate them now after reading it, because I'm now more likely not to get ripped off. bluetongue.gif
